MANCHESTER CITY COUNCIL
REPORT FOR INFORMATION
Committee:
Children and Young Peoples Overview and Scrutiny
Committee
Date:
17 July 2007
Subject:
Access to dental care in Manchester
Report of:
Alison Jackson, Project Lead, Children’s Service
Delivery, Manchester PCT and JCU
Purpose of Report:
To inform members of current position in Manchester for access to dental
care.
1. Where can I get information on local dentists?
There is a widely publicised Dental enquiry line run by the PCT (0161 237
2596) which provides people with details of local dentists. All yellow pages
directories in Manchester provide information about how to enrol with a local
dentist and information about access to emergency treatment. This is found
at the beginning of the directory under “local NHS services”. This information
is also available at health clinics and local libraries. In addition, the Patient
Advisory Liaison Service (PALS) Officer in the PCT can provide information
concerning dentists taking on NHS patients.
2. Do all dentists take on NHS patients?
Most dentists are contracted with Manchester PCT to provide some NHS
treatment. However, they may not always be able to take on new patients.
The PCT regularly monitors this situation and is working with local dentists to
maximise the availability of NHS dental treatment.
3. What to do if you need an NHS dentist?
You should contact the dentist of your choice and ask if you can be seen.
Most dentists will examine you and recommend what treatment you require.
They will advise you whether they can treat you on the NHS or privately.
4.What if the dentist is not taking NHS patients?
Not all dentists are available to provide treatment on the NHS. You can
contact any dentist and ask if they are taking on NHS patients. Alternatively
you can telephone one of our dental access centres for an appointment:
Kath Locke, Hulme
0161 455 00219
Victoria Mill, Miles Platting
0161 205 1487
5. Dental Services for Vulnerable Children and Adults
The Manchester Community dental health service will see children and adults
with complex needs. This service is accessible through enquiry at your local
health centre.
These “frequently asked questions” including details of payment bands for
NHS patients will be uploaded onto the PCT website in due course. A leaflet
containing this information will also be printed and widely circulated in the
near future.
