By: Ed Kuligowski MSM 620 Takata has been engineering the precision of our products to the millisecond for over 70 years. We have been driven by our dedication to save human life while embracing a pioneering spirit in developing innovative products. Takata has spread this same thought process to all of our locations worldwide. “Somewhere on earth, Takata products have saved the preciousness of human life today”. We continue to challenge ourselves and our affiliates all over the world to develop new technologies so that people will be able to experience the joy of life. Our dream is that some day there will be zero victims due to traffic accidents. And we hope the day will come when the word “TAKATA” becomes synonymous with “safety”. http://www.takata.com/en/about/history.html#l02 Takata was established as a textile manufacture in 1933 in Japan. In 1960’s Takata begins to produce the first 2 point seat belt for automobiles. 1980’s Takata breaks into the US market and establishes it self as a competitive supplier of automotive restraint systems. 1990’s Takata begins to manufacture airbags for US auto manufactures. Currently Takata through several mergers and acquisitions, has positioned itself to be the number 2 automotive tier one supplier in the world for safety restraint system. Dr. W. E. Deming visits post war Japan and passes his 14 point philosophy onto Japanese business men who institute his management practices and eventually begin to take over as world leaders in quality and manufacturing. Point 13 of Dr. Deming’s philosophy states that management must “Institute a vigorous program of education and self-improvement” http://deming.org/ Dr. Deming’s work greatly influences Japanese culture and The Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE), in his honor create the Deming Prize, one of the highest honors a organization can receive. Influenced by Dr. Deming’s work Takata institutes a tuition reimbursement program in the late 80’s to all of its employees. In addition Takata focuses in on hiring top educated human capital to increase is knowledge base as Dr. Deming suggests. Today Takata still practices the implementation of Dr. Deming’s 13 rule. Takata still grants tuition reimbursement of up to $5250.00 annually for undergraduate studies pertaining to your current position of future position in the organization and $8500.00 annually for graduate studies. As recently as 2007 Takata has launched a company college program. The program offers company guided course on skill improvement (i.e. MS Office, Data Base Utilization, MS Project…ect.), GED Programs, Health Education, and product specific training and education. These courses are offered by approval to any of the + 40,000 employees at Takata through our company intranet portal. In April of 2012 Takata is undergoing a major organizational global restructuring. The current organization is directing its efforts to become more of a matrix type organization in order to better serve its customers and provide the organization with further growth potential in new emerging markets and eventually become the number 1 supplier of safety restraint systems in the world. In an effort to better position ourselves and help bridge the cultural gaps and differences Takata is beginning to implement a cross cultural training program. This program will offer key individuals in the company the experience of living and functioning in different cultural setting in order to better understand the demographics that they are dealing with on a daily bases.
