Project Title (maximum 1 line): The role of liver biopsy in the investigation of cholestatic liver disease in infancy.
Hypothesis/Question to be Addressed (maximum 4 lines): Liver biopsy is often performed with other clinical
investigations, in the evaluation of cholestatic liver disease in infancy. However, the value of liver biopsy with its
concomitant risks, in clarifying a diagnosis remains unclear. As such, further study is needed to determine if liver
biopsy leads to a confirmatory diagnosis and influences clinical decision making.
Specific Aims (maximum 10 lines):
1) To review the indications for liver biopsies performed in infants over a 10 year time period
2) To assess whether the liver biopsy results confirmed a specific diagnosis and/or led to a change in patient
management
Role of Student (maximum 15 lines):
The student will be responsible for:
1) reviewing the literature on the clinical utility of liver biopsies in infants
2) creating a case report form for data extraction
3) reviewing the results of liver biopsies performed in infants and correlating this with other clinical
investigations
4) reviewing any complications relating to liver biopsies in this population
5) Using this data to propose a clinical algorithm for when liver biopsies should be performed in infants
6) Preparing an abstract for submission to present and development of a manuscript for publication
