EATING DISORDERS SERVICES IN SCOTLAND 2012 Unless otherwise stated, these services are for adult patients, usually 16/18 – 65 Patients under the age of 18 are served by a good network of General CAMHS services in every Health Board, who will have experience in management of Eating Disorders and access to one of the 3 CAMHS Inpatient Units where necessary. A few CAMHS services have separate specialist ED teams, but the only specialist CAMHS Eating Disorders Inpatient Facility in Scotland is in the Independent Sector at Huntercombe Hospital in West Lothian NORTH OF SCOTLAND Inpatient Unit for the North of Scotland The Eden Unit Block C, Clerkseat Building Royal Cornhill Hospital Cornhill Road Aberdeen AB25 2ZH Tel: 01224 557758/557769 Fax: 01224 557757 email: [email protected] The Unit is hosted by NHS Grampian. Referrals are from Consultant Psychiatrists in Eating Disorders from the Specialist Eating Disorders Outpatient Services in the North of Scotland MCN for Eating Disorders. There are 10 places, including a ‘three week bed’ which allows for emergency of elective brief admissions. There are also 4 Day Programme Places for patients who are able to travel from home. Specialist Outpatient Services The Grampian Eating Disorders Service Eating Disorder Service Fulton Clinic Royal Cornhill Hospital Cornhill Road Aberdeen AB25 2ZH Tel: 01224 557392 A multi-disciplinary team, offering assessment and treatment on an out-patient basis to patients with eating disorders aged 18 and over. The Service accepts referrals for patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and other related disorders where they are a significant presenting problem. It accepts referrals from GPs, and other health professionals with the GPs knowledge. Referral Guidelines are available. It provides a service to Grampian, Orkney and Shetland. Though based at Fulton Clinic, Royal Cornhill Hospital, EDS provides a regular peripheral clinic to Elgin and videotherapy clinics to other areas of Grampian and the Islands. The Highland Eating Disorder Service Psychotherapy Services Larch House Stoneyfield Business Park INVERNESS IV2 7PA Tel: 01463 253667 A multi-disciplinary team, offering assessment and treatment on an out-patient basis for people with eating disorders aged 16 or over and under 65 years of age. (16 - 18 year olds, still at school, may be treated by the adolescent service). Referrals are accepted from GPs and other health professionals. Service Provision is to NHS Highland but currently excludes the area previously known as Argyle and Bute. Tayside Eating Disorders Service 4 Dudhope Terrace Dundee DD3 6HG Tel: 01382 306160 Fax: 01382 306166 Email: [email protected] NHS Tayside Eating Disorders Service aims to ensure the safe and appropriate outpatient management of individuals with severe and/or enduring eating disorders. The service will also coordinate the admission and discharge arrangements of those requiring inpatient care for their eating disorder. As a general rule, referrals should be directly from either APTS or CMHS staff (with the GP’s knowledge). An exception to this would be where, for example, inpatient care may be likely due to the severity/complexity of the individual’s presentation at the time of GP assessment. NHS Tayside Eating Disorders Service is aimed at individuals in age range 18 (16 for those not at school) to 64 years who have a diagnosable, severe and/or enduring eating disorder. Primarily, this will include the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and atypical presentations (e.g., binge eating disorder), where these are identified as the most significant presenting problem. NHS Tayside Eating Disorders Service is aimed at individuals with (atypical) anorexia nervosa in the moderate to severe range (i.e., BMI <17.5 to <15), and/or with significant co-morbidity (e.g., diabetes, pregnancy, depression). NHS Tayside Eating Disorders Service is aimed at individuals with (atypical) bulimia nervosa in the moderate to severe range (i.e., with frequent binge-purging), and/or with significant co-morbidity (e.g., diabetes, pregnancy, depression). NHS Tayside Eating Disorders Service is not aimed at individuals whose disordered eating is acutely life threatening and who, consequently, require admission to a medical unit (e.g., anorexic individuals with BMI </= 13 and evidence of system failure, bulimic individuals with daily purging and significant electrolyte imbalance). The service will, however, co-ordinate the admission arrangements, care plans (when on a medical ward) and discharge arrangements for such individuals. NHS Tayside Eating Disorders Service is not aimed at individuals who are actively psychotic, with ongoing positive symptoms, or, indeed, individuals whose disordered eating is driven by a psychosis. Where alcohol/substance misuse is a primary presenting problem, referral should, in the first instance, be made to NHS Tayside alcohol/substance misuse services, although joint working with other agencies will be actively encouraged. Where a learning disability is a presenting problem, referral should be made to NHS Tayside Learning Disabilities Service. SOUTH EAST OF SCOTLAND Regional Inpatient Unit Regional Eating Disorders Unit St. Johns Hospital Livingston WEST LOTHIAN This newly opened 12- bedded Unit accepts referrals from Eating Disorders Services in the SE of Scotland Forth Valley NHSFV have a specialist Eating Disorder Service which is based at Kildean Hospital in Stirling. This is a Forth Valley wide service for people between the ages of 19- 65. Younger patients would be seen by the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in NHSFV. Referrals are accepted from GPs, other professionals within the Mental Health Services, Dietetics and our General Medical colleagues. Problems would be moderate to severe in nature and the multi-disciplinary team - which consists of a Consultant Psychiatrist, Senior Nurse Therapist, Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT) and Senior Mental Health Dieticians - offer assessment and treatment mainly on an out patient basis. Treatment can be individually or in a group. Therapists work closely with the Dieticians, often developing joint packages of care. We are also able to access Day Hospital assessment, Occupational Therapy assessment and provision of Art Therapy. The main aim is to treat and support people at home. People with a less severe Eating Disorder are usually managed within the General Psychiatric services and/or Day Hospital provision. This specialist service can also provide consultation and advisory services and can support clinicians and multidisciplinary teams working in the wider community. This can be in the form of team meetings, telephone contact and teleconferences. The Cullen Centre sees patients with eating disorders of varying severity and is therefore also involved in Tier 4 services. Anorexia Nervosa Intensive Treatment Team (ANITT) The Anorexia Nervosa Intensive Treatment Team (ANITT) 6th Floor Kennedy Tower Royal Edinburgh Hospital EDINBURGH EH10 5HF Tel: 0131 537 6783 Fax: 0131 537 6160 www.anitt.org.uk/ ANITT is a small multidisciplinary team which provides intensive treatment to people with low weight anorexia nervosa in Lothian who might otherwise have to be admitted to hospital. Treatment is on an outpatient basis and can be delivered in the home. Referrals are accepted from Primary and Secondary care. ANITT can also provide consultation and advisory services and can support clinicians and multidisciplinary teams working in the wider community with low weight adults with Anorexia Nervosa. This can be in the form of team meetings, telephone contact and teleconferences. Borders NHS Borders have a specialist Eating Disorder Nurse who is based in Melrose but provides a Borders wide service for people aged 16+. Dr Joanna Smith, Consultant Psychiatrist, has a part time remit for Eating Disorders, but I was unable to track down further details Fife There are currently no discrete specialist services for people with eating disorders in Fife in Primary or Secondary Care and no Tier 3 Eating Disorders Services but individuals with eating disorders can be referred to a number of services for advice and intervention. These include general Adult Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology. Referrals can be made by a GP or Consultant. The dietician who works part time with ANITT is available to discuss concerns with GPs or other colleagues working with the most complex cases of Anorexia Nervosa. ANITT consists of a psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, dietitian, assistant clinical psychologists and a team administrator. As the team is extremely limited in capacity it cannot accept all referrals received. Referrals to the team can be made only from a person's GP or a consultant. Fife patients may be referred to the regional Eating Disorders Inpatient Unit WEST OF SCOTLAND Glasgow Greater Glasgow and Clyde Adult Eating Disorder Service Templeton Business Centre GLASGOW G40 1DA Service Secretary: Sandra Reilly [email protected] A community based psychological service that treats individuals 18 and over with moderate to severe eating disorders. Patients are referred to the service from their Community Mental Health Team who remain involved in their care. This service is based at Templeton Business Centre, Glasgow and provision will be extending to the Clyde area in the near future. Telephone 0141 277 7585 for more information. I understand that 4 NHS inpatient beds are also opening in Glasgow Adolescent Eating Disorder Service A community-based service with in-patient provision based at Skye House on the Stobhill Hospital site, this service is for 12-17 year olds suffering from Anorexia Nervosa and low weight eating disorders. Lanarkshire Tier 3 Eating Disorder Service 2nd Floor Buchanan Centre Main Street COATBRIDGE ML5 3BJ Tel: 01236 703402 Fax: 01236 703451 Opening Hours: Mon – Fri 9am – 5pm The Tier 3 Eating Disorders Service team provide assessment and care of the medical, nursing, dietetic and occupational therapy needs of those who suffer from eating disorders Lanarkshire wide. People aged 16 – 65 can be referred to TESS by their GP or another health professional if their health is deemed to be at high risk due to an Eating Disorder. Referrals will only be accepted if the T.E.S.S. Indicator form is completed. The unit offers a 10-bedded high dependency service providing nasogastric feeding, one-to-one nursing as appropriate and intensive care as well as an eating disorders service for individuals requiring a slightly lower level of care. Referrals are accepted from the NHS across the whole of Scotland. Facilities include a Schoolroom, Pet therapy, Art therapy, Family therapy, including multi-family therapy.
