We imagine, anticipate, act, and react. We experiment, develop, and transform. We become desirous and decide what to do about it. We choose whom to pursue and whom to not. We choose ourselves instead of another. We choose more than one other. We choose to pay for it and get paid for it. We choose to abstain altogether. We all want what we want, and what we want changes. In this class you will explore a variety of human sexual experiences, identities and behaviors. You will also most likely heighten your awareness of your own sexual desires, values and creativity. You will read material not usually discussed in other classes, and for this reason you should only take this course if you feel comfortable and wish to read, hear, see, think and write about sexuality in ways you may have not before. Some of the material will at least make you blush—some may embarrass you, or make you angry—it is your choice to be here. My hope is that any discomfort will be a productive step in your development as a human being. You are welcome to voice, anonymously or not, any questions, concerns or comments. We will explore theoretical perspectives, concepts and practical applications in this class. We will introduce topics including: Desire; Sexuality Education; Enthusiastic Consent; Bodies; Sex & Gender; Attraction, Arousal & Response; Sexual Behavior; Atypical Sexuality; Sexual Relationships; Sexual Orientation; Fertility, Pregnancy & Childbirth; Safer Sex, Contraception & Abortion; Sexual Assault, Harassment & Partner Violence; Sexual Wellbeing; and Sex as a Commodity. My goal is that you relate the material directly to your life so that you may connect to yourself, understand yourself and empower yourself sexually. What you learn here you can use to positively affect your life, make sound choices regarding your own sexuality as well as sound responses to another’s. You will also develop a better understanding of sexuality studies from different academic disciplines such as women’s, gender and sexuality studies, sociology, psychology and biology. COURSE OBJECTIVES Become your own “sexpert”. Dispel sexual myths, prejudices and taboos. Network supportive relationships and resources in the Cincinnati community that nurture, develop and emphasize sexual diversity and well-being. Improve your knowledge of your own body and those of your potential partners. Improve your ability to give and receive more pleasure from sex, should you engage in it. Learn to communicate about sex in a way that is comfortable and accurate to you. Learn to negotiate conflict productively (have a “good, clean fight”) and deescalate potential physical and emotional violence. Grow to understand, explore and respect sexual identities, practices, relationships and subcultures different from your own. Recognize the historical, political and demographic context within which sexuality happens. Link your sexual “instincts” to larger social norms, narratives and institutions. Expand your knowledge of birth control choices available as well as safer sex practices. Develop a working knowledge of sexuality so that you can accurately educate others. Examine current topics, perspectives, and research regarding sexuality. I EXPECT… You to arrive promptly, with your cell phone turned off. No laptops. Intro to Human Sexuality WGS 2010/PSYC 2010 Fall 2012 You to respect our time in class. You may think whispering is quiet – it is not. It bothers other students and me. You to complete all assignments by stated deadlines or points will be deducted (or not accepted at all). I will not remind you when things are due – stay on top of due dates. Contact your TA if you have legitimate concerns about meeting class expectations BEFORE the due date. No recording (audio or visual) of this class may be made without my advance consent. These are to make sure you are doing the reading and understanding the material. No makeup quizzes. If class participation is lacking, I may give more quizzes. If it is high, we will do more in-class activities. ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION (25) Attendance is taken through the PRS device. Even though this is a large class, I expect there to be discussion and for it to feel like a smaller class. If class participation and/or attendance are low, this class will be boring and I will be forced to quiz you more often to make sure you are reading. Many of the issues we discuss are controversial, and people will disagree. I expect you to keep an open mind and think critically regardless of your opinions. No matter how intense your disagreement, treat your classmates and teachers with respect, and you will be treated with respect. If you miss class, it is advised that you get notes from a colleague. Do not ask me if you missed anything important. You did. EXTRA CREDIT (55) I provide a lot of extra credit assignments. If you do them now you are already ahead of the game. DISABLED STUDENTS Appropriate accommodations will be provided to students providing documentation from the University Disability Services office. ANONYMOUS BOARD Intro to Human Sexuality WGS 2010/PSYC 2010 Fall 2012 There is an anonymous forum on Blackboard on which anyone can post and to which anyone can respond. If you specifically want my opinion, say that in the title. I will delete your message if it violates any rules. This forum is a safe space to ask questions, leave comments or start discussions ANONYMOUSLY. IMPORTANT: you must check the “ANONYMOUS” box under your typed message or your name will appear with your post. PROHIBITED on this forum: 1. DISRESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR/LANGUAGE (name calling, harassment, attacking, inflammatory or hateful language, etc) 2. INAPPROPRIATE POSTING (using the forum as a hook-up site - create a link to somewhere else to hook-up) 3. ILLEGAL CONTENT (mention of or proposition of illegal activity—illegal drugs, underage drinking, sexual assault, bestiality, molestation, etc—discussion of fantasies are ok) “THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID” You are welcome to call this out at any point in class (use your better judgment). I think this line can be surprisingly illuminating – simple, immature and brilliant. Intro to Human Sexuality WGS 2010/PSYC 2010 Did I Miss Anything? Nothing. When we realized you weren’t here we sat with our hands folded on our desks in silence, for the full two hours Everything. I gave an exam worth 40 percent of the grade for this term and assigned some reading due today on which I’m about to hand out a quiz worth 50 percent Nothing. None of the content of this course has value or meaning Take as many days off as you like: any activities we undertake as a class I assure you will not matter either to you or me and are without purpose Everything. A few minutes after we began last time a shaft of light suddenly descended and an angel or other heavenly being appeared and revealed to us what each woman or man must do to attain divine wisdom in this life and the hereafter This is the last time the class will meet before we disperse to bring the good news to all people on earth. Nothing. When you are not present how could something significant occur? Everything. Contained in this classroom is a microcosm of human experience assembled for you to query and examine and ponder This is not the only place such an opportunity has been gathered but it was one place And you weren’t here —by Tom Wayman From Did I Miss Anything?
