October- Breast Cancer
Employer E-mail:
Hello!
Did you know that other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among
women! 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Although male breast cancer is rare,
accounting for 1% of all breast cancers, men need to be aware too! Many people can survive breast
cancer if found and treated early. A mammogram, which is a screening test for breast cancer, can help
detect breast cancer early. This October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and a great time to
raise awareness about the importance of early detection. Talk to your employees about screening
guidelines and the resources available to them to get screened.
Activities this month:
 National Mammography Day is the third Friday: October 20, 2017. Encourage your employees to
wear pink that day. Hold a “lunch and learn” or post flyers about breast cancer screenings.
Resources:
 For a quick factsheet on breast cancer screening check out Susan G. Komen:

Health Savvy Tips for Employees:

Get screened! National Mammography Day is the third Friday: October 20, 2017. Mammograms
take an x-ray of the breast to check for any cancerous lumps. If you have family history of breast
cancer, talk to your doctor about when to get screened.
Know your coverage! Insured women over 40 can receive a free mammogram as part of the
health care reform law. Uninsured individuals can receive free cancer screenings from the
Breast, Cervical, and Colon Health Program (BCCHP) in Washington State. Check your eligibility
