Augusta RYDC Working toward goal of decreasing youths’ 1 mile run time and increasing number of push-ups and sit-ups within 90 days. The initial fitness test has been administered and the youth are working toward bettering their physical fitness daily. Nurse has obtained youths’ vital signs, height, and weight and will compare these stats to those obtained in 90 days. Facility is working to increase the youths’ knowledge of obesity and BMI and encouraging a healthy lifestyle. Bob Richards RYDC Base physical fitness testing was conducted and youth are working to better their physical fitness daily. After 90 days, youth with the most significant increases will be recognized in an Olympic style ceremony. Posting benchmarks and scorecards in the living units and MPA to give a visual indicator of performance improvement throughout the year. Claxton RYDC While youths’ BMI is being monitored by staff, they are also being educated on obesity, its effect on health, and being provided information on nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices. Staff is providing education on risk factors of obesity and how to live a healthy lifestyle to youth with a BMI of ≥30 and aiding them in setting goals to improve health and decrease BMI. March 18, 2014 Elbert Shaw RYDC Improving physical activity through a walking challenge in which students are working toward increasing the number of laps they can walk within 90 days. Working to decrease BMI of obese youth. Nursing is tracking BMI and a volunteer from the Creative Arts Guild is working with youth through creative exercises and activities. Some youth are seeing significant weight loss already. Eastman YDC Working toward increasing physical stamina through a 90 day fitness test that challenges youth to increase the number of push-ups and sit-ups they can do in 1 minute. Currently being tracked by P.E. instructor. Working toward making youth aware of their appropriate weight and body fat percentage. Also allowing youth to find their current standing through purchasing a tool youth can use to measure their own body fat. Eastman RYDC Coach completed an initial physical assessment on each youth in the P.E. program. Youth were reassessed at the end of the 30 day period and found that 60% showed improvement in their physical ability. South Central Health District presented “Obesity in a Bottle” to 93% of youth on 12/31/13. Plan to obtain suggestions from youth on future presentation topics. Gainesville RYDC Providing a physical fitness test to youth to give them a measurement to improve on a personal level. Reassessing youth in 30 days to find if they bettered their results in at least 2 of 4 categories. Promoting youth making healthy choices during visitation by offering free fruit alongside the vending machines. Also plan to decrease unhealthy vending machine choices by 30% within 90 days. Gwinnett RYDC No data. No data. Loftiss RYDC Youth have been weighed and their BMIs configured. Youth with a BMI of ≥30 will be encouraged to make healthier dietary choices and weighed again in 30 days. Youth admitted to the facility are being given wellness education from ChooseMyPlate. Martha K Glaze Youth received the flu vaccine and education on the flu vaccine and hand washing procedures in an effort to decrease the spread of flu at the facility. There have been no reported cases of flu to date. Youth with allergies are being instructed to educate themselves and be prepared to handle an allergic reaction. They are also being taught the differences between a true allergy and intolerance and how to identify an allergen on a food label. Youth have been pre-tested and will be posttested in the future to test knowledge. March 18, 2014 Macon YDC Youth referred to a chronic care plan have begun on a 3 month fitness program including cardiovascular and strength training to help reduce BMI. Youth’s weight will be reassessed and the program will be tailored to the individual as needed. Youth are completing weekly food logs to learn about calorie consumption and nutritional values as they related to overall wellness and weight management. Macon RYDC Youth participated in an art contest exhibiting healthy lifestyle choices. Posters were judged for content and skill used to convey the subject. First, second and third place awards were given and the posters were placed in the cafeteria for the rest of the month. Wellness education materials are provided to each unit monthly to increase youth’s awareness of wellness and healthy lifestyle. Marietta RYDC The Wellness Ambassador provided a fitness brochure to all students during classroom instruction. Youth enjoyed the material and received verbal praise. Every month, a fitness activity is being conducted with youth by a fitness instructor, staff member, or community volunteer. In February, youth participated in large muscle body weight exercises. Metro RYDC The goal of providing the flu vaccine to at least 50% of youth was met between the months of October to December of 2013. Using sign-up sheets, youth were given the chance to identify exercises they were most interested in as adding to the PBIS incentives program. A date will be established to incorporate these exercises. Milan YDC A wellness survey was issued to youth and staff to determine the health needs and concerns. Fitness testing is being implemented at least 4 times per year with the goal of at least 60% of youth participating. Youth will then receive reports on their fitness level. Muscogee YDC Exceeded goal of providing the flu vaccine to 50% of youth by vaccinating 78% of youth by 1/31/14. Medical staff is conducting bimonthly weights to track the progress of weight loss for youth with a BMI of ≥30. Rockdale RYDC Youth are learning food groups and guidelines through education about MyPlate. Their knowledge will be tested by designing their own MyPlate by April 2014. You are being educated about poor eating habits that effect the brain and body and will be able to list at least 6 negative effects by the end of the school year. March 18, 2014 Sandersville RYDC Monthly newsletters are being distributed to all of the youth. Youth and staff are working to implement a seasonal vegetable garden at the facility. Savannah RYDC Youth are being encouraged to participate in a mile run with a time of 20 minutes or less by May. Posters and pamphlets are being distributed around the facility to excite youth about the upcoming Youth Health Fair in October. Sumter YDC A “Healthier You” challenge was sponsored at the facility that educated youth about the pros and cons of receiving the flu vaccine. Two flu clinics were also held allowing all youth to voluntarily get vaccinated. A “Weight Management Program” was initiated where participants take healthy actions toward weight management through nutritional education and increased physical activity.
