INJURY PREVENTION POLICY
Principle: Properly laid out child care areas, properly designed and maintained equipment, and
adequate supervision help to reduce both the potential and the severity of injury.
Procedure: To reduce the potential for injury in child care, Discovery Time Preschool will do the
following:
Furniture, Equipment, Toys.
 Discovery Time Preschool ensures that all equipment is routinely maintained all equipment will
be evaluated and inspected monthly.
 Results will be recorded on the monthly checklist.
 All broken or recalled equipment will be disposed of or repaired according to the
manufacturer’s specifications.
 No equipment that is unable to meet manufacturer’s recommendations will be utilized.
 Manufacturer’s information for all purchased equipment will be obtained and stored by the
Director in a file for potential need.
 The preschool will follow the guidelines from the manufacturer for maintenance care and use
of equipment/toys.
 The Director is a subscriber to free email notifications from the Consumer Product Safety
Commission regarding recalled toys and equipment.
 Donated items, toys or equipment are only allowed if the donator has the manufacturer’s
information. The Director will ensure that the item is not on a recall list and is in appropriate
condition.
Water Temperature
 Discovery Time Preschool will test the water temperature monthly.
 It will be recorded on the monthly checklist.
 The water temperature will be between 60-120 degrees to prevent scalding.
Toxic Chemicals
 Discovery Time Preschool will prevent injury and poisoning by toxic materials.
 All toxic materials will be kept in areas inaccessible to children, both elevated and locked.
 Plants will be clearly labeled and all toxic plants will be removed from the child care area.
 Routine checks of toxic chemicals will be performed monthly and recorded on the monthly
checklist.
 All art supplies (paint, markers, etc.) will have the ASTM symbol for safety.
Electrical Outlets
 Discovery Time Preschool will cap all outlets in the child care areas.
 All outlets will be inspected daily and recorded on the daily checklist.

Passenger Safety Seats
 Discovery Time Preschool ensures that all equipment (car seats) is routinely maintained and is
not broken or recalled.
 No car seat will be used that is unable to meet manufacturer’s recommendations.
 Car seats will be inspected monthly and recorded on the monthly checklist.
 The preschool’s policy regarding transporting children requires a signed parental consent form.
 Copies of the Director’s and teacher’s driver’s license and current insurance will be kept in their
employee files.
Potential Strangulation Hazards
 Discovery Time Preschool will ensure that there are no strangulation hazards in the child care
areas.
 The classroom will be evaluated daily for any potential strangulation hazards in the
environment. Results will be recorded on the daily checklist.
 All toys with cords over 7” in length will be removed or the cords will be trimmed to less than
7” in length.
 Conduits or cord covers will be used on electrical cords to eliminate access to cords.
 Extension cords will not be used in child care areas.
Drawstrings on Clothing
 Discovery Time Preschool will monitor clothing for potential risk of strangulation.
 Upon discovery of drawstrings at the hood/neck, parents will be provided with information
about the potential injuries associated with drawstrings.
 Routine checks will be recorded on the monthly checklist.
The following items will be on hand for potential injuries:
First Aid Kit (Including gloves), CPR guidelines, Emergency Phone Numbers, Emergency Contact List.
Staff will use Universal Precautions and precautions listed in our Exposure Control Plan when dealing
with bodily fluids on an injured person.
