COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course is to build on the concept, foundations and clinical skills following Fundamentals of
nursing. In the class, students will develop nursing assessment, diagnosis, implementation and
evolution skills in relation to the adult client. Students will begin identifying nursing assessment
data related to optimal functioning and. The uses of the nursing process in helping patients
achieve optimal state of functioning and seek resources when an identified health risk or actual
deficit is noted. Students will develop cultural sensitivity and critical thinking at the novice level.
Topics of study include: caring for patients with alterations in fluid and electrolyte balance,
caring for patients in cardiac, respiratory, hematological, immunological, problems. The class
also explores the nursing process as it realties to clients with cancer and caring for patients
with endocrine and gastrointestinal health deviations.
COURSE FOCUS
This course is entirely and exclusively focused on developing critical thinking as a professional
practical nurse concerning of the pathophysiology of various health conditions. By the end of
the course students will be able to care for clients in an acute care setting.

 Apply NANDA-I principles to nursing diagnosis of clients in various health states
 Recognize normal and abnormal laboratory values and diagnostic tests for various

physiology in identifying, caring and educating patients in various altered health states

SHOCK
Apply Associated Nursing Diagnosis: Fear, ineffective tissue perfusion, risk for injury,
imbalance nutrition
List and explore the types of shock.
Describe the nursing care of client in shock using nursing diagnoses, goals and outcome
criteria
Compare and Contrast the signs and symptoms of each stage of shock.
Identify appropriate nursing interventions
FLIUD/ELECTROLYTES
Apply Associated Nursing Diagnosis: Deficient/ Excess fluid volume, Ineffective health
maintained, ineffective tissue perfusion.
Describe the fluid volume excess and deficit in body.
Identify and compare the major functions of the major electrolytes—sodium, potassium,
calcium, magnesium, and chloride.
Apply knowledge and critical thinking to why older persons are at increased risk for fluid
and electrolyte imbalances.
Identify appropriate nursing interventions related to alteration in fluid and electrolyte

Identify the major functions and regulatory mechanisms that maintain water and
electrolyte balance in the body and appropriate nursing interventions and consideration
DEATH
Apply Associated Nursing Diagnosis: Grieving, compromised family coping, fear, social
isolation, powerlessness, spiritual distress.
Describe personal, cultural and social beliefs and practices related to death and dying.
Examine responses of patients and their families to terminal illness and death.
Discuss and apply works of research on death and dying patient and families

Describe different types of burns, nursing assessment and identify nursing
interventions.
Review grieving, post trauma, fear and disturbed body image problems identified with
burned patients
Examine airway, skin integrity and infection alterations and nursing interventions

DIABETES
Apply Associated Nursing Diagnosis: Adult failure to thrive, disturbed sensory
perception, imbalanced nutrition, ineffective health maintence, ineffective tissue
perfusion, powerlessness, noncompliance, risk for infection, risk for injury
Discuss treatment of diabetes mellitus and hypo/hyperglycemia.
Identify nursing interventions for a patient diagnosed with diabetes mellitus or
hypoglycemia.
IMMUNOLOGICAL
Apply Associated Nursing Diagnosis: Ineffective health maintence, ineffective
protection, fear, fatigue, social isolation
List the components of the immune system and describe their role in innate immunity,
acquired immunity, and tolerance.
List the nursing data to be collected when assessing a patient with a disorder of the
immune system
Describe the tests and procedures used to diagnose disorders of the immune system
and nursing considerations for each.

Explain and demonstrate the nursing responsibilities for patients with alternation in

ENDOCRINE
Apply Associated Nursing Diagnosis: Delayed growth and development, ineffective
coping, health seeking behavior
Identify nursing assessment data relevant to the function of the adrenal and pituitary
glands.
Describe the pathophysiology and medical and nursing interventions associated with the
treatment of adrenocortical insufficiency, excess adrenocortical hormones, hypopituitarism,
diabetes insipidus, and pituitary tumors
Assist in developing nursing care plans for patients with selected disorders of the
adrenal and pituitary glands.
RESPIRATORY
Apply Associated Nursing Diagnosis: activity intolerance, anxiety, ineffective breathing
pattern, ineffective airway clearance
Identify examples of chronic inflammatory, obstructive, and restrictive pulmonary
diseases.
For selected chronic respiratory disorders, describe the signs and symptoms, complications,
diagnostic measures, and nursing interventions associated with treatment.
Assist in developing a nursing care plan for the patient who has altered breathing
patterns.
CARDIAC
Apply Associated Nursing Diagnosis: anxiety, decreased cardiac output, compromised
family coping, ineffective health maintenance, risk for excess fluid volume, risk for

Explain the pathophysiology, risk factors, signs and symptoms, complications, and
treatment for selected cardiac disorders.
List the data to be obtained in assessing the patient with a cardiac disorder.
Assist in developing nursing care plans for patients with cardiac disorders.

STUDENT CONDUCT
As in all LPN courses, students are responsible to understand and observe policies in the
Renton Technical College Student Handbook and the Allied Health Student Handbook. See
the handbooks for policies on cheating and plagiarism, both of which are not tolerated and
will result in zeros on the exam/assignment in question and possible expulsion from the LPN
program. Additional LPN classroom expectations will be presented during orientation. At times
students may need to leave during class; those who leave may not reenter the classroom until

ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Cell phones, pagers, PDAs, and other audible electronic devices must be turned off during
class time. If an electronic device disrupts class, it may be removed by the instructor until the
end of class.
TARDINESS and ABSENCE
Entering class late, leaving during class, and returning during class are disrespectful,
distracting activities. For this reason, the classroom doors may be locked when class begins
and when class resumes after break to decrease distraction. Students who arrive late or who
leave during class may not enter the classroom until after the next break. Approximate break

schedule is 10 minutes before the second hour of class. Class entry will be granted only with
completed daily assignment. Early daily assignments will not be accepted for any tardiness or
absence, excused or unexcused; late assignments will be accepted within 24 hours of the time
due and will have a 20% penalty assessed. Assignments more than 24 hours late will not be
accepted.
A tardiness or absence is excused only for appropriate situations as determined by the
instructor and the Director of Nursing. A healthcare provider’s note may be required for
absence due to illness. For a tardiness or absence to be eligible to be considered excused, the
student must call or e-mail the instructor 30 minutes before class begins. Absenteeism from all
or a portion of the class will be the responsibility of the student to obtain class materials and
announcements from a classmate. At least 10% will be deducted from the grade of an exam
taken late even if the tardiness or absence is excused. The make-up test or exam may be
different than the original one and must be scheduled with the instructor outside of class time.
Unexcused absences result in a zero for that test or exam.
ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE
Renton Technical College and the nursing faculty want each student to succeed. Students who
have any type of disability that substantially limits the ability to succeed are encouraged to
contact the Special Populations Counselor in Student Services, Bldg. I Room 225. All
information acquired during a visit with the Special Populations Counselor is confidential and is
used to help students succeed in their programs.
Students who receive a failing grade on a quiz or midterm are required to make an
appointment with Lindy to discuss the grade and obtain further assistance. Additionally,
students who have an overall grade less than 85% at any point in the quarter are required to
make an appointment with the instructor above students will be given written warnings and
placed on academic probation with a proposed plan for improving academic performance.
PREPARATION FOR CLASS
Students are expected to come to class on time with readings and daily assignments
completed. (See “Daily Assignments” above.) Assignments, required readings, and tests will
help to reduce the need for “cramming.” The object is for students to think and to learn each
day. Because the material that needs to be learned may be more than can be covered during
class time, students must accept responsibility for material not discussed in class. Students
must actively examine and learn all information in the text. If a student finds that either class
presentations or text materials are unclear, it is the right and responsibility of that student to
seek clarification.
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Research indicates that the brain learns least by reading or sitting and listening to someone
talk, but that is learns best when it is stimulated with variety and something new. For that
reason, this class will include the following:

I – Incomplete: When a student is not able to complete a class for reasons beyond his control
an instructor may assign an incomplete.
W -Withdrawals: A student may officially withdraw from a program or class by completing the
appropriate form and submitting it to registration by the eighth week of the quarter. After the
eighth week, the student cannot receive a “W” and will be graded based on the course
requirements as described in the course syllabus. A withdrawal prior to the 10th day of the
quarter is not listed on the transcript. After the 10th day of the class, a “W” will appear on the
student’s transcript but it is not computed in the GPA. An official withdrawal can only be
initiated by a student or a counselor at the request of the student.
Grade Grievances: A student who feels he did not get the grade he earned must first speak
to the instructor involved. If the dispute is not resolved, the student may file a grade grievance
with the supervising dean. Grade grievances must be based on:
(1) grade entry errors,
(2) the instructor did not follow the grading criteria outlined in the course syllabus, or
(3) grading criteria were not uniformly applied.
A grade grievance MUST be filed within one quarter after the quarter in which the grade was
assigned, not including summer quarter.
GRADING AND EVALUATION
READ THIS!!!!
An overall grade of 80% (equivalent to a C) or better in Nursing Care of the Adult 1 is required
in order to progress in the LPN program per Renton Technical College LPN program policies.

Students must obtain at least an 80% average on all tests excluding the midterm and
final exam in order to pass the course; less than 80% average for tests will result in an
overall course grade of no more than a C- or 79%, which is not adequate to pass the
class or move to the next quarter.

Students must pass at least one of either the midterm or the final exam with at
minimum score of 80% to pass the course; less than 80% on both final and midterm will
result in an overall course grade of no more than a C- or 79%, which is not adequate to
pass the class or move to the next quarter.

Students must pass the quarter with an overall average of 80% to pass the course
and go to the next quarter

Unit Tests – 50%
Frequent tests will help students to stay current with learning and to prepare for the midterm
and final. Test grades will be posted no earlier than 1430 the day following the test and may be
posted later per LPN program policy.
Midterm Exam - 20%
The midterm exam will cover all materials covered up to the point of the exam. Midterm
conferences will follow as time permits. Students who are not successfully passing the course
after the midterm will be notified in writing and will be placed on academic probation.
Final Exam - 20%
The final exam will cover all material note included on the midterm exam. Final exam grades
will be posted after students take the last final for the quarter. DO NOT call the instructor for
final grades- they come from the registrar
Class participation – 5%
Students are expected to attend class and participate in all activities by contributing to
discussions and completing all in-class projects. At the end of the quarter, students will
complete the class participation rubric on themselves and their group members. Each absence
will count as 1% deduction from the class participation grade. Being tardy 2 times will count as
one absence and 1% grade will be deducted from the class participation grade.
NOTE: The instructors reserve the right to alter the syllabus, course content, and schedule as
necessary. Changes will be communicated to students in class.

Student will be warned once and then will be asked to meet with the dean the second time a
negative disruptive behavior is demonstrated in class in order to continue in class.
