A key aspect is the interface between biological materials and electronics.” (from “Guide for Proposers Call FP62004-IST-NMP-2, June 2004). As pointed out above a critical part of a diagnostic device is the interface between the organism and the senor unit. We call this link the body interface (BI) and have specialised in designing different types of interfaces. In the medical field the most often used specimen is blood due to its large volume and easy access. However, blood does not always reflect the situation at local level and many substances which are produced/used at cellular level can not be detected in blood. In the recent past the interstitial fluid turned out to be of high interest. The reasons are manifold: 1. very large volume (up to 12 litres in a human being) 2. immediate link to the cell -the site of most metabolic actions 3. concentrations of metabolites/drugs in blood does not always reflect the concentration at cellular/precellular level (gradients over the endothelium) 4. possibility for very local measurements 5. possibility for continuous monitoring (no clotting, reduced risk of infection) e.g. glucose monitoring for patients with diabetes Until recently the interstitial space was of minor interest due to the fact that no techniques were available to harvest interstitial fluid and analysing the small amounts. Microdialysis- a technique which enables the collection of interstitial fluid of different tissues (fat, muscle, brain,…) turned out to be a very useful tool(e.g. contiunuous glucose monitoring). However, the membrane limits collection of high molecular substances (e.g. proteins). Therefore a new technique was developed called Open-Flow Microperfusion which enables sampling interstitial fluid without limitation of the molecular/cellular size. This sampling technique in combination with microfluidics and sensors offers new applications in different fields, e.g.: Diagnostics Pharmacology Intensive Care Cosmetics Oncology 2 Tissue Engineering Endocrinology Dermatology Transplantation Medicine Our institute has long lasting experience in monitoring substances in the interstitial fluid including Design of sampling probes Design of microfluidics Performing human/animal trials Chemical analysis (ELISA, GCMS, nano-HPLC, nano-LC-MS) KEYWORDS: Body Interface, Microfluidics, Microdialysis, Open-Flow Microperfusion, Monitoring, Medical Technologies, Sensors, Diagnostics, Pharmacology, Dermatology, Cosmetics, Endocrinology EEC-Participation: ADICOL (Advanced insulin infusion using a controlled loop) FP5: IST-1999-14027 CLINICIP (Closed loop insulin infusion for critically ill patients) FP6: IST-2002-506965 2. 4. URGENT STREP: Engineering interrelations between ancient Mediterranean sites (INTRAMEDS) ABSTRACT: A Greek University Institute for hydraulic and maritime engineering is looking for partners for a STREP project to be presented under the INCO-MPC call. The goal of this project is the implementation of appropriate protection measures for ancient hydraulic and harbour works built around the Mediterranean basin in ancient times. Partners sought are SMEs from the engineering sector with interest in ancient hydraulic and harbour works. DESCRIPTION: It is widely accepted that this heritage includes also technological achievements of any kind. The present proposal focuses on hydraulic and harbour works built around the Mediterranean basin in ancient times. A means of protecting this heritage is through elucidation of decay causes of the materials of the above-mentioned works, which will eventually lead to adopting appropriate protection measures. This investigation will involve also dating by recently developed methodologies. The proposed procedures will be applied to a few representative hydraulic and harbour projects across the Mediterranean ancient world. A by-product of this exercise would be the identification of interactions in ancient world around Mediterranean in terms of methods, technologies, materials used in construction of hydraulic and harbour works in the area. A 'technology transfer' could thus be pin-pointed in space and time as well as how ancient methods in planning and constructing such works compare with present-day knowledge. Results of this investigation may reveal common roots of Mediterranean societies with respect to, at least, some aspects of technological culture. A supportive activity to the above research will be the establishment of protocols for the recording, and the recording itself of such works of the ancient world around Mediterranean. Do wykonanych w roku 2003 r. minister gospodarki i pracy zaliczył zobowiązania offsetowe o wartości 517,9 mln USD.
