Scoring Films using Garage Band
,
June 6 12:40-2:40 Presenter: Sarah Johnston, Harrington Elementary, Email: [email protected]
Lesson Objective: Teachers will be able to demonstrate and understanding of how to create
soundtracks for short films using Apple's GarageBand software. This knowledge can be applied
to many types of lessons for students in many different content areas.
Part 1: Introduction and Lesson Objective
Part 2: Where to find creative commons films for use in Garage Band
Creative Commons Search
Archive.org - Internet digital library of free books, music, images and videos

Part 3: File Formats
*Garage Band likes .mp4, .mov, NOT .m4v and maybe others
*If you come across a file format that cannot be imported into GarageBand, try iTunes, Quicktime, or
Zamzar to convert the file to .mov or .mp4.
Part 4: Opening Garage Band, Importing the movie into GarageBand
*Click on New Project, and scroll down to “Movie” on the Splash Screen (may be “Create New
Movie Project” in previous versions), double click or click “Choose” to open.
•Name your project and click “Create”.
*Drag and Drop movie file from desktop or use Media Browser
to locate on computer
Part 5: Garage Band Basics/Erasing original Audio/Adding loops/Working in Preview mode

Highlight orange audio track and press delete key, or use Edit>Delete to remove original
audio

Click on the
button (or Eyeball in previous versions) to access GarageBand
Loops. Click on loop category to bring up list of available loops. Click once to preview
and once again to stop.




Once you have selected a loop, click and drag it into the project beneath the
frame(s) in the movie where you would like it to go.
To copy the loop, simply drag it in again, or Option-click on the loop and drag a
copy to where you want.
To “loop” or repeat the loop, move your arrow to the top right corner of the loop
until it turns into the circular arrow,
then click and drag the loop as long as
you want.
Click on the small movie icon in the movie track to preview the movie. **Please
note, working in preview mode seems to take a lot of memory and may cause
Garage Band to lock up. I caution my students to use this only when absolutely
necessary and to SAVE OFTEN to prevent losing their work.
Part 6: Adding sound effects outside of GB and Recording sound effects, Foley, or dialogue
using the built-in or USB microphone
You can search for additional FREE sound effects online and import them into your project by
right-clicking them in the browser, downloading to your computer’s Audio file or desktop, and
then locating them in the AUDIO section of the Media Browser in Garage Band. Just make
sure you are adhering to the law regarding Copyrighted sound files!
Here are some Royalty Free and/or Creative Commons Licensed online sound effects:

Or….make your own!




Click on the Plus sign button
or go to Track>New Track to create a track to
record using the iMac mic or an external mic.
Choose “Real Instrument” (the microphone picture) and click Create.
Once the new track is added, and as long as it’s highlighted, you can use the record
button to record your voice, sound effect or acoustic instrument.
MIC TRICK!- If there is too much noise in the room, and you don’t have an external mic,
make a cylinder mic out of a sheet of paper and hold up to the computer mic. This
should reduce the amount of classroom noise considerably, but not completely.
Part 7: Sharing your Work (Saving to iTunes, exporting, burning to CD, etc.)
From the SHARE menu your options are…
Send Movie to iTunes… I make kids use this to create mp4 versions of the files so that they will
be small enough to post online and on the server so that I can put on a flash drive for our final
movie watching day. They can also put their movie into their playlist and burn along with other
music projects we have done throughout the year.
Send Ringtone to iiTunes…, Send Movie to Web…, Send Movie to iDVD… I generally do not use
these options.
Export Movie to Disk… Use this option to create different versions for emailing, web, ipod,
iphone, dvd, etc. Creates a file on your computer , not an actual CD.
Burn Song to CD… Use this option to make an actual CD of the project. Will only playback audio,
not video. I do not use this option when I am creating movie soundtracks, but instead, use
iTunes since it retains the video and instruct kids to open in iTunes to watch their video.
Part 8: Q&A, Hands-on creating time, Course Evaluations
