Human Research Ethics Committee Risk Assessment Checklist Low risk research is research in which the only foreseeable risk is one of discomfort. The National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007, updated May 2015) describes discomfort as “less serious than harm…which can involve body and/or mind. Discomforts include, but not limited to minor side effects of medication, the discomforts related to measuring blood pressure, and anxiety induced by an interview”. Where the risk, even if unlikely, is more serious than discomfort, the research is not low risk. Actions If you answer ‘No’ to all questions, you can submit your application at any time for expedited ethical review.
