1. In Our World, read pages 89, 90, 94. Answer the following questions. Record the information of your
answers in an Inspiration Idea Map. Label each information secton as Law, Empire, Government, or
Society.
Government
*Who was the first pharaoh and what was his great accomplishment (pg. 89)? The first Egyptian
pharaoh was Menes. He was king of Upper Egypt. His armies swept north into the Nile Delta, in about
3100 B.C. They overthrew the king of Lower Egypt, and to show his victory, Menes made a new crown.
The new crown was pieces from both crown, to show the unification of Egypt.
*What are two meanings of the word "pharaoh" (p. 89)? The word Pharaoh refers to “great palace” but
now is given to every ruler of Egypt.
*What were the many responsibilities of the pharaoh (p. 90)? Concentrating on governing the kingdom,
keeping it prosperous, expanded customs and local governments, traded more, allowed more
freedom of religion, and expanded the empire. The pharaoh’s actions, each and every one of them,
helped shape the life of Egypt.
*What role did pharaoh serve in the Egyptian religion (p. 90)? The pharaoh served a big role in Egyptian
religion. They believed the gods made them pharaoh to do a certain job. One pharaoh said the gods
made him a shepherd. These pharaohs were believed to be living messengers from the gods.
*How did the pharaoh collect resources to feed the tens of thousands of people who worked for him in
his government? (p. 94) Often, he used resources found in the Kingdom. He would have the farmers
harvest plants, and give them money for well harvested crops. He would also steal from other parts of
Egypt, often Nubia.
