Morgan Dean Computational Science The general definition of the American Dream is anything that one individual can strive for and reach under American laws. Each person will take this very broad definition, and they will manipulate it until the definition defines their life goals in America. I have derived my own definition of the American Dream. My derivative of the American Dream definition has to do with my education. I want to learn the most I can. I would like to take my education, and use it to become a computational scientist. Being a computational scientist would be the definition of my American Dream. The definition of my American Dream has come from my parents and the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM). My parents are the ones who try to provide me with the best education. They encourage me to research things that are of interest to me. My parents help me get through school. They understand that all of the classes I will take will not all be useful for me when I get older and enter the real world of jobs. My parents are the ones who informed me about NCSSM. They knew that I have always been a science and mathematics kind of person. My parents saw this school as the perfect opportunity for me to take classes in science and mathematics that are not offered at my base school. My parents drive me to all of NCSSM events and residential weekends. Also, NCSSM has influenced my definition of the American Dream. If I had not done the online program, I would not be able to take classes in the computational sciences as a high school student. Classes like my Medicinal Chemistry class are only offered at NCSSM. No other high school offers classes like these for high school students. My parents are the ones who got me involved in the school, and NCSSM has given me the American Dream of becoming a computational scientist. 2 Being in base public schools, I know that I will not learn what I want or need to by just being in the classroom. I must learn outside the classroom on my own time. Because I cannot get what I want in my base public school, I have worked extremely hard to get into NCSSM. Originally, I wanted to be a residential student, but I realized that I did not want to be around people twenty four hours of the day for seven days of the week for two years. Also, in the online program I can take classes that are not offered in a regular classroom setting to the residential students. If the residential students want to take classes like Computational Chemistry, Computational Biology or Bioinformatics, or Medicinal Chemistry, they must take it online as well. So, it was clear that the way to go was online. The NCSSM online program would have the classes that would be most beneficial to me. These computational classes would help in guiding me into the computational science field. For me to reach my dream, I need to work hard in school to get high grades in all of my classes. I will not accept anything below a ninety-two and five tenths percent. I need to continue with the online program at NCSSM. I need to take all of the computational classes offered to me. I need to work very hard in learning the material in these classes, so I can take what I learned and further my knowledge in college. I need to go to a college which offers a degree in the computational sciences. I am specifically looking for computational chemistry. After I receive my degree in computational chemistry, I will need a job in computational chemistry. When I find a job and start, I will have seceded with my American Dream of becoming a computational scientist. My parents have been a big help in leading me on my path of becoming a computational Scientist. They have lead me to NCSSM which has given me the opportunity to take computational science classes. These classes help me to stand out from the other students 3 applying to colleges with computational science. In the end my parents and NCSSM will help me the most with my American Dream of becoming a computational scientist. Sadly, things such as English hold me back. I have to work much harder in English than in any other class. English limits the time that I can spend on my other classes. Also, with the Critical Reading section on the Scholastic Aptitude Test my entire score is lowered. A lot of colleges take this score very seriously which is why I need to get it up as high as possible. This means I must work even harder and get an even higher score in the Mathematics section to raise my total score. Otherwise, I may not be able to get into a school which has a great computational science program.
