Jerwood Composer+
Application Guidelines and Information
Background Information
LSO Jerwood Composer+ will support two
composers in planning and running two concerts
each in the Jerwood Hall at LSO St Luke’s,
including work of their own developed through
the programme.
Composers will gain entrepreneurial skills around
programming for specific audiences, planning and
organising events, marketing and budgeting.
Guidance and expertise will be available from LSO
staff and an external mentor, and composers will
also have access to compositional workshops
and masterclasses with other composers and LSO
musicians.
Composers will gain valuable knowledge and
practical experience for developing their own
opportunities and careers, while making a
substantial contribution to the diversity and
innovation of the concert programme at
LSO St. Luke’s.
How does LSO Jerwood
Composer+ work?
Two composers will be accepted onto the
programme for 16 months, from September 2017
to December 2018. The programme will provide
both with:
• Access to composition workshops and
masterclasses with other composers and LSO
musicians
• Access to the rehearsal spaces and facilities
at LSO St Luke’s, subject to availability
• Mentoring from a music industry professional
elected by the composer
• The opportunity to plan and deliver two
showcase concerts at LSO St Luke’s, with
freedom to explore classical and/or cross-genre
collaborations, and unconventional concert
formats and timings. The composers will be
able to showcase their own new music, as
well as that of others (living or past). Inclusive,
accessible programmes which further the
diversity of the new music sector will be
encouraged.
• A fixed budget for each showcase event, to
cover artistic and technical costs. As an example,
this could allow for up to six performers
including LSO players, with four rehearsals.
However the budget can be allocated differently
depending on the proposal.
• Support with the showcase events through a
tailored programme of mentoring from key LSO
staff to build skills and experience in:
» Programming: working with LSO personnel to
explore approaches to creative programming
and presentation for different types of
audiences; timings and formats (early evening
‘rush hour’ concerts, lunchtime events, evening
concerts etc); and a clear artistic vision in the
development of engaging programmes.
» Event planning: planning and managing the
two events, with mentoring and guidance from
LSO staff on planning timelines, production
tasks, technical requirements, and event
management.
» Budgeting: working with an allocated budget,
modelling the financial viability of each concert
(income, expenditure, cash flow etc), and
achieving artistic goals within budget.
» Marketing: learning from LSO Marketing staff
about event promotion, and bespoke marketing
plans for specific target audiences and kinds of
events.
» Fundraising: although external funding is not
required, composers will receive input from the
LSO’s Development team in how to approach
fundraising for future projects (eg. grantfundraising, crowdfunding, in-kind support etc).
» Evaluation: evaluating the financial, audience
development and artistic outcomes; any
particular successes or difficulties; and how
learning from this will influence the development
of future projects.
Timeframe and time commitment
Placements will start in late September 2017 and
end in December 2018.
Planned access to facilities, workshops, and an
external mentor is available throughout the period,
alongside a tailored programme of mentoring from
LSO personnel (scheduled to suit the composer’s
experience and availability, as well as LSO staff
availability).
The first pair of concerts will take place in spring
2018, and the second pair in autumn 2018. Each
concert will be followed by an evaluation process.
It is expected that composers will be able to
commit an average of 5-6 hours per week across
the programme period.
• the LSO Soundhub community
• rehearsal spaces at LSO St Luke’s, subject to
availability
• LSO rehearsals at Barbican and LSO St Luke’s
• £5 tickets for most LSO concerts at Barbican and
LSO St Luke’s
• event promotion via LSO and Soundhub social
media and Soundhub community-targeted
notifications
• a programme of Soundhub Events taking
place throughout the year, which may include
workshops with LSO players, seminars with
industry professionals and sessions with
LSO Guest Artists.
If you have any queries, please contact Natalia
Franklin Pierce (details at the end).

Selection process
Selection will be made by the LSO Jerwood
Composer+ advisory panel, made up of a diverse
range of representatives from the music sector
who will make assessments based on:
• the originality and suitability of the composer’s
proposal for an event at LSO St Luke’s
• the composer’s development potential and
commitment, both musical and entrepreneurial
