Dr Marlon E. Cerf
Citizenship: South African
Qualification: PhD (Health Sciences), MBA
Position: Specialist Scientist of the Biomedical Research and Innovation Platform
Experience: Dr Cerf focuses on developmental programming of metabolic diseases.
Specifically, he investigates the effects of maternal high fat feeding on progeny health
and disease. Most of his studies are on diabetes and the endocrine pancreas studying islet
morphology (beta- and alpha-cell dynamics), key islet cell transcription factors, glucose
sensing factors and lipid profiles. He also has a strong interest in other metabolic diseases
of lifestyle. Child and maternal health are the overarching themes of his research. He has
published mainly in the fields of islet biology, nutrition, physiology and pediatrics and
serves on several editorial boards for journals.
RESEARCH FOCUS AREAS
beta cell development and function, developmental programming, glucose sensing,
insulin signaling, lipids, metabolic diseases, nutrition, obesity, transcription factors
