Jan. 27, 2012 Planning • Surveyed natural resources advisory group • Interface with community leaders • Conversation/listening to landowners • NC State University & other local state agency data Current Context • 75% forested • 4th highest timber harvest income in 2010 • 82% privately owned • Limited experience with forest management practices or timber sales • Role of consulting foresters Target Audience & Skills • Private forest landowners who want to learn: – more about consultants – factors affecting timber value – how to use forest survey tools – Factors affecting forest management goals Basic Forestry Measurements Field Day • 2 hour workshop • Local registered forester • Pee Dee NWR Goals • Allow participants to do hands-on activities. • Learn about tree conditions in the field. • Interact with a professional in the forest industry. • Learn from peers as they ask questions related to their own management strategies. Short Term Objectives (workshop) • Demonstrate how to use a clinometer, diameter tape, and prism. • Correctly identify timber species with commercial value in our region. • Evaluate general health and quality of a mature tree. Med. Term Objectives (within 6 mo.) • Use their Biltmore Stick to estimate timber value on sample plot on their property, then extrapolate to a per acre basis. • Feel comfortable working with a consulting forester, NC DFR, or other agency for technical assistance.
