Biology- Cell Division Guiding Questions
1. What do your cells do as you grow?
2. What are 2 reasons that cells divide instead of continuing to get bigger and bigger?
3. Explain the relationship between surface area and volume in a growing cell.
4. Explain the differences between the following vocab terms: chromatin, chromosomes, and
sister chromatids.
5. Be able to name AND describe the main events that go on during Interphase: G1 phase, S
phase, and G2 phase, and Mitosis: Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, AND
Cytokinesis.
6. What is Go? Why are neurons frequently found in this stage? Why do some cells divide
more quickly than others? Give examples of cells that divide frequently and explain why
they would do so.
7. Explain chromosomes, sister chromatids, and the process of mitosis in terms of chocolate
and vanilla oreos (*****we will get to this on Wednesday!!).
8. Why is it important that the cell has G1 and G2 checkpoints before entering mitosis?
9. Explain the mitotic spindle. Why is it important? What is it made up of? What organelles
play a role? What types of cells have those organelles? What is its function?
10. Putting the pieces together… what disease can be caused by failure of these
checkpoints? Why? How?
11. What is apoptosis? Why is it important?
12. Be able to recognize the characteristics of each stage of mitosis and identify them in a
slide/ picture.
13. Compare/contrast internal cell cycle regulators and external cell cycle regulators. Be able
to give an example or two of each. Why are these important to the life of the cell?
14. What is cancer? Name 5 potential causes or contributors to the development of cancer.
15. What are 3 ways a person could change their lifestyle in order to decrease their chance
of developing cancer?
16. Compare/contrast malignant vs benign tumors.
17. Explain how lung cancer could be found in muscle or brain tissue. (Explain metastasis)
18. Compare/contrast binary fission and mitosis.
19. Compare/contrast advantages and disadvantages of asexual reproduction.
20. What is the process of differentiation? What are stem cells? What are the differences
between adult and embryonic stem cells?
21. What are some of the advantages/disadvantages of using the different types of stem
cells?
22. Know the differences between the terms totipotent, pluripotent, and multipotent.
