Choice Hotels is proud to announce Room To Be Green—a property-level program designed to reduce
environmental impact and waste, meet the changing expectations of today’s environmentally conscious guest
and potentially lower operational expenses.
Hotels that participate in and meet all requirements of this optional program will receive a designation from
Choice as a hotel that “Supports Green Practices”. This eBrochure icon will help to promote your efforts to be
more green—an important distinction and differentiator for many potential guests.
Program Requirements
A complete program overview, including the opt-in starting point, is now available through the Room To Be Green
Program Website hosted on ChoiceCentral. Participation begins with the online submission of a self-administered
program audit where properties provide a record of current green practices to Choice. The following three elements are
required of participating properties.
Requirement # 1 - Energy Conservation - Hotel uses energy efficient indoor lighting solutions, such as compact
fluorescent (CFL) bulbs and LED exit signs. Addressable areas include common space, corridors, guest rooms, or
back office.
Minimum Requirement: CFL bulbs in all guest room lamps and light fixtures (excluding ceiling-mounted
lighting).
Requirement # 2 - Water Conservation - Hotel offers all guests a towel and/or linen re-use program (both are
encouraged) via approved in-room collateral and/or signage.
Minimum Requirement: Hotel must offer at least one program (towels or linens). In-Bathroom collateral is
to be in the form of a card presented alongside bathroom towels on rack, shelf, or vanity. Cards should
clearly indicate the towel re-use policy (only towels on the floor will be changed). Guestroom collateral is to
be in the form of a card (tent or flat) clearly indicating the procedures of the program. The total number of
towel/linen collateral pieces must be limited to no more than 3 per guest room.
Requirement # 3 - Recycling and Waste Reduction - In accordance with State or Local Recycling Laws, a hotel
has a program with designated recycling receptacles for staff and guest use. Addressable areas include common
space, corridors, vending areas, guest rooms, and back-office.
Minimum Requirement: At least one recycling receptacle in plain view for guest usage in hotel common
area, for any of the following recyclable items: newspaper, glass, plastic, aluminum, etc. Bin must be
professionally labeled in words or symbols clearly indicating its purpose for collection/disposal of
appropriate recyclables.
Program Requirements Subject To Change
Program Compliance
Although Room To Be Green is optional and the “Supports Green Practices” designation does not represent an official
certification, it is important to carefully note the full compliance instructions for this program, including future quality
assurance review parameters and penalties for non-compliance.
Optional Activities
Beyond the basic program requirements, the website outlines a series of recommended activities in five addressable
green categories. Hotels can simply address only the three minimum requirements for Energy, Water, and Waste. Or,
expand to a more holistic approach to include Employee Engagement and/or Safe Product Usage.
Make Room To Be Green!
At your hotel, the Room To Be Green program is a modest first step toward a greater collective good. In fact, you may
already be incorporating the core program elements into your existing daily operations. As others join you in these best
practices, imagine the positive environmental impact of our combined efforts!
