Staff Compensation

Old Compensation Package

All full time field staff paid 40 hours per week
Paid bi-weekly
1440 hours in the summer
640 hours in the winter
Total of 2080 hours for the year
Any hours over 2080 paid at hourly rate
Hours under 2080 rolled over
HSA and RRSP with 3% matching

New Compensation Package
• Hourly wage plus overtime
• Bi-weekly pay period
• Overtime equals 1.5 for hours worked over
88 in a pay period
• Stat holiday pay as per ESA regulations
• Vacation will be accrued as in the past:
 4% for 2 weeks, 6% for 3 weeks etc.
• HSA, RRSP and LTD

Why Change?
• Ensure compliance with MOL by recognizing

• Enhances our ability to recruit staff by being a
compensation leader in the industry
• Pay employees for hours they work
• Pay the right people the more money

Save $ Option
• Option to bank pay for the winter when less
hours are worked
• This is not the same as banking hours – staff
are banking $
• All earnings are processed in the pay period
earned, all CRA deductions will have been
paid. Staff are simply banking net $ over and
above a pre determined amount

Lessons Learned
• Need to ensure employee buy in
• Budget for OT hours and stat holiday pay
• Provide real life case study scenarios based
upon employees past hours worked
• Staggered start times:
 Crew leader vs Lead hand vs laborer
• Manage downtime (non billable hours)
• Average total hours worked for full time field
staff in summer = 1,614
• Average overtime hours paid for field staff in
summer = 172
