Cell Webquest Project Descriptor: As a group of inquisitive scientists, you will discover the different organelles in a plant or animal cell, where they are located in a cell, and what the purpose for each organelle is. You will be assigned either a plant or animal cell. You will then work with your group members to research cell organelles, design cell “trading cards,” and create a PowerPoint presentation over your cell that compares cell organelles to our school building. Objective: Students will be able to: Describe the different organelles in a plant or animal cell Locate the different organelles in a plant of animal cell Describe in detail the purpose of each organelle Research the organelles Design trading cards Create a presentation State Science Standards: 3.1 Identify that plants and animals have structures and systems that serve different functions for growth, survival, and reproduction. 21st Century Standards: 2.1.3 Use strategies to draw conclusion from knowledge to curricular areas, real-world situations and further investigations. 2.1.4 Use technology and other information tools to analyze and organize information. Procedure: 1. You will be put into groups of three. You will work with your group members for the entire WebQuest. Each group member will need to participate in this WebQuest in order to have an excellent grade in the end. You will have to work together to come up with a quality presentation to present to your fellow classmates. In your groups, each person will have three roles: researcher, recorder, and technology "guru." Your group members and you will have to switch among these roles throughout the WebQuest. The researcher is in charge of looking up information. The recorder is in charge of writing down information. The technology "guru" is in charge of working on the PowerPoint. Everyone will have to work together and stay on task. 2. You will be assigned either a plant or an animal cell. After finding out which cell you will research, your group will need to research the location and functions of various cell organelles. Record your information on the Cell Organelle Research Worksheet. *Keep in mind that not every cell organelle is in a plant and an animal cell. Research only the organelles that are in your type of cell. 3. After completing your research on cell organelles you will need to make your Cell Trading Cards. You will only do trading cards for the organelles that are in your type of cell. You will need an index card for each organelle. On one side of the index card you need to write the name of the organelle and draw a picture (Make it look nice!). On the other side of the index card you should write the function (job) of the organelle. 4. Now that you have researched and made your trading cards it's time to compile all of the information together to make a PowerPoint presentation. A cell is like a school. Your assignment is to make a PowerPoint presentation showing how the cell is like our school. To complete this assignment, you must produce one slide for each organelle explaining what part of or person in the school is like this part of the organelle. The slide must also include the name and a picture of the organelle and the organelle's function in the cell. Content vocabulary words: Cell, organelle, nucleus, nucleolus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, ribosome, mitochondria, vacuole, golgi body, rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, lysosome, cell wall, and chloroplast Assessments: Students will be assessed using a rubric.
