opportunity profile Valley Bible Church - Hercules, CA STUDENT MINISTRIES PASTOR SEARCH VALLEY BIBLE CHURCH Overview Valley Bible Church ministers to the people of Hercules and many surrounding cities in West Contra Costa County located in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. The church is known for its inspiring worship, strong teaching from the Word of God that is life changing, and for its welcoming and grace-filled atmosphere that has resulted in a richness of diversity that mirrors the surrounding communities. Valley Bible Church is looking for an experienced, self-motivated, creative and highly relational individual to build an adult ministries team that will reach families in the Hercules and West Contra Costa area, enfold them into Christian community and help them grow into mature believers in Jesus Christ. Adult Ministries spans from post-college young adults to senior adults. Valley Bible Church of Hercules, California is truly a unique place. It is a place where the grace of God is evident in the lives of the people and the presence of God is desired and experienced week after week. This local church was begun in 1971 for the purpose of revealing and endearing great biblical truths and sharing God’s magnificent message of grace to the Hercules/Pinole/Richmond area. Nearly 45 years ago, our current and founding pastor Phillip A. Howard held Valley’s first service with nineteen people in attendance in a dimly-lit, modest rented hall. This small but faithful group of believers was just the beginning and over the years God has faithfully continued to grow Valley Bible Church which now is a vibrant congregation with approximately 1,000 attending weekly. Our Mission The mission of Valley Bible Church is to “Know Jesus personally and share His love passionately.” We believe this mission is accomplished through the emphasis of our three core values: • Evangelizing - Bring people to Jesus Christ • Equipping – Teach, connect and enfold believers for ministry in the Body of Christ • Exalting - Worship the Lord together We are truly excited and humbled with the challenge God has put before us to reach the lost and hurting in our surrounding communities and to encourage Christfollowers toward spiritual maturity. Dr. Howard describes it in this way: “In 1971, we were directed by God on a Staff Valley currently has 12 full-time and 18 part-time employees, which includes 3 full-time pastors and 2 lay pastors. 2 CURRENT SNAPSHOT Current Snaphot Valley Bible Church offers two Sunday morning Worship Services at 9:00am and 11:00am with concurrent Nursery, Early Childhood and Elementary Sunday School classes. Classes for Middle School students, High School students, and adults are offered during the 9:00am hour and provide a venue for fellowship, spiritual growth and relationship building. A live web stream is available of each week’s worship service for people unable to make it to the campus. Videos of our Sunday worship services are also archived on our website for future viewing. Sunday worship service attendance averages 800 adults with an additional 250 children and students attending Sunday classes. Pastor Phillip A. Howard can be heard on KFAX Radio 6 times every week via Valley Bible Church’s radio ministry called Truth For Today. Facilities Our campus situated on 6.4 acres, includes our 56,000 sq. ft. Worship Center which has a seating capacity of 1,200 with a bookstore, library and coffee cart ministry. The building also contains 8 classrooms, our church offices, a worship ministry/choir facility, sound and light booth, and full infant and toddler nursery facilities. Our 32,000 sq. ft. Family Life Center has 10 classrooms, a full industrial kitchen, 4 multipurpose rooms and 6 offices. Valley Preschool and Daycare utilizes several classrooms in the FLC and office space and is a ministry of Valley Bible Church. 45th Anniversary Celebration October 2016 will mark our 45th Anniversary and we are again planning a wonderful celebration of God’s goodness to our ministry throughout these many years Valley also offers many mid-week opportunities for growth, service and connection targeted at elementary school students, middle school students, senior high school students, young adults, adults and senior adults. 3 MINISTRY FUNDS Valley Bible Church uses various funds in its accounting. Adult Ministries at Valley Bible Church has been allocated $232,000 for salaries, benefits and ministry expenses of the church’s $2,667,740 Ministry Fund Budget used for staff, facility (excluding mortgage) and ministry expenses. 4 LOCATION Refugio Valley Park, Hercules, courtesy of City of Hercules Location Valley Bible Church is located in Hercules, California. The city of Hercules is ideally situated on beautiful San Pablo Bay, midway between San Francisco and Napa, with handsome homes, safe neighborhoods and many exciting new projects planned. This diverse waterfront community is poised to expand its reputation as a great place to live. Hercules was voted by Forbes.com as a “Most Livable MetroArea Suburb”. The Greater San Francisco Bay Area consists of a vibrant group of diverse communities and boasts proximity to many enjoyable outdoor venues and cultural activities. A mere 25 minutes away are the world famous Fisherman’s Wharf, the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, several world class museums, an oasis of green and nature—Golden Gate Park, quaint cable cars and the infamous Alcatraz Island. Within 30-60 minutes’ drive are the rolling hills of Napa Valley, the technologically cutting edge of Silicon Valley, and beautiful old growth redwood trees at Muir Woods. In just a few short hours’ drive you can find yourself at pristine, blue Lake Tahoe, surrounded by multiple winter ski areas, or in the nation’s most scenic national park, Yosemite National Park. The city has excellent weather with an average of 265 sunny days a year. Hercules is home to Bio-Rad Laboratories, Mechanics Bank, and many other small businesses. As a suburb of the Greater San Francisco Bay Area, Valley Bible Church draws individuals and families from surrounding communities to worship here in Hercules. Golden Gate Bridge, courtesy of Getty Images 5 ASSOCIATE PASTOR OF STUDENT MINISTRIES PURPOSE The Associate Pastor of Student Ministries is responsible to evangelize, train, and shepherd the middle school, high school, and college age students at Valley Bible Church to help develop the next generation of disciples. The primary strategic objective is to define the standards by which personal evangelism and discipleship will be measured and to align the programs and ministries to achieve those standards in our students. This person will be responsible to build an infrastructure for spiritual growth and relational connection for the students who attend Valley Bible Church and in the community around Valley. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS • Special Programs – Organize, plan, budget, coordinate, promote, and effectively execute special events and programs for students such as summer or winter camps, volunteer and student leadership team retreats, summer outreach programs, school year outreach events, etc. to promote evangelism and Christian growth. • Oversee Youth Ministry Worship – Work with and lead Youth Worship Leader so that students learn to engage in honest and enthusiastic worship of our great God. • Budget Management – Manage ministry resources, facilities, and supplies. Create and manage ministry budget and calendar and train team to do the same. • Responsible to the Senior Pastor with primary daily direction coming from Pastor of Reach Out • Serve as part of the pastoral leadership, preaching, and shepherding team • Work with the other department heads and ministries to achieve an integrated approach to ministry • Supervise the student ministry staff, both paid staff and volunteers PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES • Leadership of Student Ministries – Provide leadership and vision for all aspects of student ministries from sixth through twelfth grades and for traditional college-age students. • Ministry Integration – Use a robust philosophy of Christian education that integrates with the Children’s Ministry Director and the Adult Ministries Pastor to equip the next generation of disciples by creating a seamless flow of Christian education and discipleship for those in nursery through postcollege age. • Management and Administration – Directs and oversees all direct reports both paid and volunteer. Recruits and trains volunteer team to effectively minister to students. • Teaching Students – Establish curriculum and teaching plan goals for what will be taught to all age students. Effectively, passionately, and clearly teach and preach to students the truth of God’s Word. • Parent Support – Skillfully come alongside parents of middle school and high school students by providing resources and encouragement to help them fulfill their calling to be the primary spiritual trainers of their own teens. SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES • Preaching and Teaching – Will be one of the preaching backups for the Senior Pastor and will be scheduled or called upon to preach on Sunday mornings to the adult congregation as needed. May also be called upon to teach/speak in various capacities (small groups, adult classes, retreats). OBJECTIVES • Articulate a compelling vision for student ministry evangelism, discipleship and community • Recruit, train, motivate, and effectively manage volunteer student ministry leaders and staff • Clearly define desired ministry outcomes for students, leaders, and parents • Provide shepherding care to students, ministry staff, leaders, volunteers, and parents • Prepare an annual budget for student ministries • Integrate student ministries with children’s and adult ministries to form seamless path to maturity 6 • Regularly measure achievement of the desired ministry goals and implement changes as necessary to improve overall ministry effectiveness • The ideal candidate will have a proven track record and 5 years student ministry experience leading and growing youth ministry. • Relationally, a personal magnet that connects with students and draws people into ministry • Spiritual gift mix of leadership, teaching, and administration • Competent in organization, administration, and interpersonal skills • Balanced views of evangelism and discipleship as well as knowledge and application • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with widely diverse groups of people • “Fits” and enjoys the Bay Area culture and diversity • MDiv desired, bachelor’s or higher degree is required. • Must pass the Church’s background check KEY CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS • A clear testimony of faith in Jesus Christ and a passionate relationship with Him that is evident to all who know him • Consistent spiritual and moral character and lifestyle that complies with the Biblical qualifications of an elder as described in 1 Timothy 3:1-13 and Titus 1:7-9 • A man of prayer and a man of the Word, sensitive to what the Spirit is doing in his life as well as the life of the church • Agreement with the doctrine, mission, vision, values, and elder-led governance of Valley Bible Church NEXT STEPS For individuals referred to the opportunity and for those seeking to explore next steps, please provide the following: Current resumé: Please indicate the role and 5.
