Our Story
Thursday evening in Fresno, California to go where we
were born and born again and to plant a church that would
preach and teach the Bible.” Since that life-changing
decision, the mission of Valley Bible Church has not
changed.
Valley Bible Church of Hercules, California is truly a unique
place. It is a place where the grace of God is evident in the
lives of the people and the presence of God is desired and
experienced week after week. This local church was begun
in 1971 for the purpose of revealing and endearing great
biblical truths and sharing God’s magnificent message
of grace to the Hercules/Pinole/Richmond area. Nearly
45 years ago, our current and founding pastor Phillip A.
Howard held Valley’s first service with nineteen people in
attendance in a dimly-lit, modest rented hall. This small
but faithful group of believers was just the beginning and
over the years God has faithfully continued to grow Valley
Bible Church which now is a vibrant congregation with
approximately 1,000 attending weekly.
Our Mission
The mission of Valley Bible Church is to “Know Jesus
personally and share His love passionately.” We believe
this mission is accomplished through the emphasis of our
three core values:
• Evangelizing - Bring people to Jesus Christ
• Equipping – Teach, connect and enfold believers for
ministry in the Body of Christ
• Exalting - Worship the Lord together
We are truly excited and humbled with the challenge
God has put before us to reach the lost and hurting in
our surrounding communities and to encourage Christfollowers toward spiritual maturity. Dr. Howard describes
it in this way: “In 1971, we were directed by God on a

museums, an oasis of green and nature—Golden Gate Park,
quaint cable cars and the infamous Alcatraz Island. Within
30-60 minutes’ drive are the rolling hills of Napa Valley, the
technologically cutting edge of Silicon Valley, and beautiful
old growth redwood trees at Muir Woods. In just a few
short hours’ drive you can find yourself at pristine, blue

truly are many reasons to live and work in the San Francisco
Bay Area. But more importantly than scenery or activities,
reaching a desperately lost culture for Christ and helping
believers grow spiritually are two significant reasons to
come to this area. Muir Woods, courtesy of Getty Images
