Klebsiella species
Introduction:
• Klebsiella spp. is a common important pathogen of hospital
acquired and community acquired infection .
• It is a member of Enterobacteriace family.
• Klebsiella spp. comes under the Klebsielleae Tribe.
• From the clinical isolates two types Klebsiella spp. are important :
K. pneumoniae and K. oxytoca
• K. pneumoniae is subdivided into subspecies:
K.
pneumonia pneumoniae, K. rhinoscleromatis, K. ozanae.
Characteristics:
• Genus Klebsieallae consists of gram negative bacilli, non motile,
capsulated rods, Lactose fermenting,
• Grow well on ordinary media.
• Aerobic and Facultative anaerobic bacteria.
• Reduce nitrate to nitrites and Catalase positive.
Virulence Factor:
Virulence factor - ability of bacterium to produce a disease in a
host cells.

• Serum resistant and
• Lipopolysacharide
Pathogenesis:
• Klebsiella spp. will produce the disease according to persons
immunity and within one week after coming contact of the
bacteria.
• It will produce the disease of Urinary tract infection ,
Pneumonia, Wound infection, Septicemia in opportunistic
pathogens.
Lab Diagnosis:
Sample collection:
Mid stream urine sample
Sputum sample
Pus sample
Blood sample
• Sample should be collected in clean, sterile and screw caped
container, and should be follow the standard operating procedure.
• Sample should be send to the laboratory as soon as possible .
Culture Characteristics:
• Sample will be inoculated on MacConkey and Chocolate agar
plates.
• Keep the plates for overnight incubation at 37ºC
• MacConkey agar: large, dome shaped, mucoid and lactose
fermenting colonies.
• Chocolate agar: large, dome shaped and mucoid colonies.
Identification :
• Klebsiella spp. will identified with the help of IMViC reaction.
• Sugars ferments (Glucose, Lactose, Sucrose, Mannitol) with
the production of acid and abundant gas.

A regimen that includes:
third-generation cephalosporins,
Quinolones,
Aminoglycosides,
Imipenem,
These antibiotics may be used alone or in combination. Always confirms with
susceptibility before starting the treatment.
 Treatment should last at least 14 days.
