Causative Agent: Klebsiella spp. bacteria
Mode of Transmission:
Can grow in water or in distribution systems
biofilms. Also found in feces. Can spread through
contaminated drinking water. Pick up through
contact with skin or mucous membranes.
Incubation Period: Human: 1-6 weeks (but not clearly understood)
Animal: unknown
Clinical Signs Human:
Wound infections; gastroenteritis with vomiting
and diarrhea. Septicemia may occur in
immunosuppressed persons.
Clinical Signs Animal:
It is rare to see signs in fish.
Control and Prevention: Minimize growth of biofilms by treatment to
optimize organic carbon removal, restriction of
residence time of water in distribution systems,
and maintenance of disinfectant residuals.

Person to person transmission has been observed.
There are some drug resistant strains.
Opportunistic pathogen.
