Multicellular Organisms Study Guide Test: November 11, 2016 S5L1. Students will classify organisms into groups and relate how they determined the groups with how and why scientists use classification. a. Demonstrate how animals are sorted into groups (vertebrate and invertebrate) and how vertebrates are sorted into groups (fish, amphibian, reptile, bird, and mammal) b. Demonstrate how plants are sorted into groups Essential Questions: How do scientists classify living things? What is the largest classification of living things? What are the names of the different groups? How are vertebrates and invertebrates similar? How are they different from each other? What are they 5 classes of vertebrates? What are the characteristics of each group? How are plants sorted into groups? o How are vascular and nonvascular plants similar? How are they different? o How are angiosperms and gymnosperms similar? How are they different? Vocabulary: Classification: organizing things into groups based on how the things are alike Species: smallest group for classifying living things Kingdom: largest group for classifying living things Vertebrates: a group of animals with backbones Invertebrates: a group of animals without backbones Vascular: a plant with tubes to carry nutrients and water throughout the plant Nonvascular: a plant without transport tubes to carry water and nutrients throughout the plant Xylem: vascular tissue that carries water and nutrients from roots to the other parts of a plant Phloem: vascular tissue that carries food from leaves to the other parts of a plant Gymnosperm: a vascular plant that produces seeds that are not surrounded by fruit Angiosperm: a flowering plant whose seeds are surrounded by fruit Students need to be able to: Identify which kingdom an organism belongs in Classify animals as either vertebrates or invertebrates, and the vertebrates as a mammal, amphibian, reptile, fish, or as a bird Identify which classification group a plant belongs in based on its characteristics Explain their thinking when classifying different organisms.
