Working Memory
An interviewer-administered test that measures the ability of the respondent to process
and retrieve information associated with short-term memory.
This measure tests a respondent's total range of function with respect to working
memory. It is therefore more specific and sensitive than a measure of global mental
status and can be used to assess major problems in working memory as well as minor
variations that may be a consequence of normal development and aging.

Protocol Text:
The Children’s Memory Scale® assesses a range of memory function in children and
includes short and long-term visual and verbal working memory and executive
working memory tasks. The verbal working memory subtest includes recall of two
stories read by an examiner. The respondent is given credit for correctly recalled
themes and verbatim story blocks. The executive working memory includes a forward
and backward digit span and sequence (e.g., alphabet, days of the week) tasks.
The Children’s Memory Scale® is a valid and reliable test of various aspects of shortterm and working memory.
The working memory subtest of the Children’s Memory Scale® is a proprietary
interviewer-administered test. Each Children’s Memory Scale® subtest is a part of a
complete Children’s Memory Scale® assessment and is not sold separately. To
administer a subtest requires a licensing agreement from Pearson.
