Nutrition You are what you eat Nutrients • These things are essential to life. – i.e. Root word for Nutrition • Nutrients are broken down into three different categories – Proteins – Carbohydrates – Fats Proteins 3 cals/gram • Nutrient used in muscle building/Muscle repair – Working out and breaking down muscle, body uses Protein to rebuild broken down muscle • This nutrient can also be broken down into two sub groups – Simple proteins are more easily digested • Nuts and beans – Complex proteins take more time to digest, but are more beneficial • Beef and poultry Carbohydrates 3 cals/gram • Energy source of the body – The body will use carbohydrates in the muscles to power you through the day • Like Protein, there are two sub groups to this nutrient – Simple carbohydrates are digested faster • White bread, potatoes are examples – Complex carbohydrates take more time to digest • Oatmeal, wheat bread are examples Fats 9 cals/gram • Saturated fats are fats made from animals – These are unhealthy fats • Unsaturated fats are healthier – Made from nuts, fish, and oils Water • Body is made up primarily of water – Cooling system, keeps everything working smoothly • Boyce Sr. had a kidney stone once – Doctor said he was dehydrated, and build up in kidneys were like in a car Fad Diets • When people go on diets, they just “Die” with a t • Fad diets are constricting, take away certain nutrients that the body needs – Atkins takes away carbs – Reduced fat diets • At the end of the day, your body still needs all nutrients • At the end of the day, you need to burn more calories than you take in Nutritional Plans • The only good “diets” are nutritional plans that allow you to eat all foods – Weight watchers – Body for life – Food lovers fat loss Eating Disorders • Bulimia – Eating as much food as you can, then throw up the food afterwards – “Binging and purging” • Anorexia – Not eating at all – Body goes into starvation mode, and any food is turned into fat to survive
