Australian curriculum development
Geography
In October 2012 the final F-12 Australian Curriculum: Geography will be presented to
the ACARA Board and then to the Ministerial Council for approval. ACARA is aiming
to proceed with digital publication in December 2012.
Languages
The languages (and associated learner pathways) for which F-10 Australian
Curriculum will be developed by the end of 2013 are:

A Framework for Aboriginal Languages and Torres Strait Islander Languages

Arabic, Modern Greek, and Vietnamese (one learner pathway to be developed,
pitched to learners who have some background in the language)

French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish (one
learner pathway to be developed, pitched to second language learners)

Chinese (three learner pathways to be developed to cater specifically for second
language learners across F-10, background language learners across F-10 and
first language learners in Years 7-10).
Further work will be undertaken to determine the process and timelines for
developing Australian Curriculum in additional languages beyond those listed below
(in the first instance, for Auslan, Classical languages, Hindi and Turkish).
The Arts
Consultation on the draft Australian Curriculum: The Arts closed in September 2012.
There are 5 subjects in The Arts curriculum: Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and
Visual Arts. The draft curriculum is currently being revised. The proposed date for
publication is yet to be advised.
Health and Physical Education and Technologies
These shape papers have been finalised and are available on the ACARA website.
Consultation on the draft curriculum for each learning area is planned for early 2013.
Civics and citizenship
Consultation on the draft shape paper has closed and the final shape paper is
expected soon.
Economics and Business
Consultation on the draft Shape of the Australian Curriculum: Economics and
Business has closed and Department feedback will be included by the Board of
Studies NSW in the NSW response. The curriculum has been written for Years 5 12, with recognition of prior informal learning experiences for Years F - 4. Economics
is the underpinning discipline, with Business applying economics concepts across a
range of business contexts.
Materials for Students with Disability
Consultation on the materials to be used for students with disability concluded on 7
October 2012.
