Excretion workshop 28 March 2014 Introduction Eurostat Background • The set of 28 agri-environmental indicators was set up in a Commission Communication in 2005 • Eurostat, DG AGRI, DG ENV, JRC and EEA work together in accordance with a Memorandum of Understanding to provide the indicators • DG CLIMA and DG SANCO are also following the work • Internationally, FAO and OECD are working in close cooperation with Eurostat on AEI DireDate • In order to bring clarity in exactly what data are needed for the indicator work and for the policies they serve, Eurostat launched the DireDate project • This project provided a very good overview of the data needed, and results can be seen • However, certain gaps remain, especially related to nutrient flows • One specific issue is the fact that nutrient flows are very much depending on livestock manure, but the nutrient content of this manure is not measured directly, but estimated through excretion factors Atmosphere AEI 18. Ammonia emission AEI 19. Greenhouse gas emissions AEI 10.2. Livestock patterns Feed Livestock Animal products Excretion Import of manure AEI 11.3 Manure storage Feed Export of manure Grazing Manure application AEI 15. N balance Biological N fixation Atmospheric deposition AEI 10.2 Cropping patterns AEI 11.1 Soil cover Crop products AEI 26. Soil quality AEI 7. Irrigation Soil Mineral fertilizer AEI 5. Mineral fertilizer consumption AEI 11.2. Tillage practices AEI 21. Soil erosion AEI 27.1 Nitrate pollution AEI 16. Risk of P leaching Groundwater and surface water Excretion factors Gross nitrogen excretion for Nitrates Directive Animal type Belgium (Flanders) Netherlands Dairy and breeding cows 97 99 - 131 Boars 24 17 Fattening pigs 13 8,9 Broiler 0,6 0,4 Aim of the workshop • Understand the excretion factors and how they are calculated at present • Discuss a common methodology for Europe • Bring forward the idea to increase coherence and comparability between data sets and countries by increasing transparency • Put forward a draft methodology for reporting livestock manure nutrient contents for all European policy reporting requirements Thank you very much for your attention!
