Journals regarding the medical field are written at a very constant basis relating to the
new treatment of cancer cells, or just more theories on an old theoretical thinking. Doctors as
well as others in the medical field use these journals to gain a deeper understanding of the field,
as well as look into new research being done on specific cells in the body. These types of
journals bring to light the research that many research centers’ spend thousands of dollars on, as
well as hours of work from employees to find a cure for specific illnesses. I plan to research the
new styles and upcoming cure’s which pertain to lung cancer.
My review of journals was seen through the New England Journal of Medicine, as well as
University Library of Medicine, also known as Pub Med. I found an article relating to lung
cancer which was titled, “Genistein enhances the effect of epidermal growth factor receptor
tyrosine kinase inhibitors and inhibits nuclear factor kappa B in nonsmall cell lung cancer cell
lines.” This article is about using a new drug which is found in natural products, such as broccoli
to help kill the many pathways of cancer cells, specifically lung cancer. It explains that there are
many drugs available to fight lung cancer cells, but they only target one pathway, while leaving
the other pathways open for lung cancer cells to return. This journal article states that Genistein
is able to fight the multiple pathways of lung cancer cells, and may finally cause a major dent in
the growth of these abnormal cells.
After researching on the site of Pub Med, I was unavailable to find any details on how
articles should be assessed based on writing and trying to make language appropriate for all to
2
understand, for those in the medical field, and for those who are not. It seemed that Pub Med
was just a publication of research articles in the medical field with no real foundation for specific
criteria for how to submit and write their article. For the few articles, I read through it did seem
very professionally written, with writing that those in the non-medical field could usually
understand.
Specifically in this article, many numbers were given for the certain drugs, which made
the writing rather confusing to read. But this seemed necessary in the research journal for those
in the field or drug manufacturing to understand which name and number the successful drugs
were, compared to those that had little or no effect. This article overview was clear, and concise
with an ability of non-medical field personal to understand. It seemed that even one with a basic
high school education could read and understand the article very well; many may get flustered by
the many uses of drug names, which can be quite long. So to make things simpler for the reader
of this article, not only were words used to describe the results, but also charts were added to the
paper, for those who wanted a visual understanding of what they were reading.
The overall tone and style of this journal article was one of ease for a reader, with very
simple words, except when describing the drugs and their following number. The tone of the
paper was one on which not to intimidate the reader, but to allow them to very much understand
the concept behind the research article. After reading the article, I did come off with a basic
understanding of what the article was trying to portray with their natural product way of killing
off the many pathways of lung cancer cells.
Those who write In the Pub Med journal are known to written by researchers that work in
research center, as well as doctor who write about their clinic trials. Pharmacists also write in
this journal and they are writing about their specific drugs and how they target the cancer cells in
3
specific pathways in which the cells may follow. Pub Med has many genres published by many
different people, and different categories which are usually based on the medical field. Pub med
is a website funded by the government that is available online for everyone to view. These
articles in the journals are written by researchers all over country, and sometimes abroad.
