The Female Endurance Athlete: Injury Prevention & Rehabilitation An interdisciplinary lecture event featuring top experts in sports medicine, physical therapy, and psychology! Saturday, October 29, 2011 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus 13121 E. 17th Ave., Aurora, CO 80045 Education 2 Bldg. North, Room 1102 Presented by the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus Physical Therapy Program Marquette Challenge Team: The Marquette Challenge is a grassroots fundraising competition between physical therapy students across the country. All proceeds are donated to The Foundation for Physical Therapy which supports research in the field of physical therapy. Female endurance athletes are prone to injuries and illnesses that may jeopardize their futures. This lecture series addresses the management of female endurance athletes: from injury prevention to rehabilitation. This interdisciplinary approach covers many aspects of the female endurance athlete. The lectures will benefit all professionals who work with these athletes: PTs, physicians, coaches, athletic trainers, psychologists, nutritionists. Deborah Saint-Phard, MD – Orthopedic injuries, energy balance and stress fractures in female athletes. Dr. Saint-Phard is the founder and director of CU Women’s Sports Medicine and an associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Saint-Phard has been selected as a top doctor by the Best Doctors in America® and is also a former shot-put World Champion and Olympian. Her clinical research interests are in the areas of stress fractures, the psychological impact of injury on athletes, the female athlete triad, and selfesteem in female athletes. David James, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS – Physical therapy, return to sport, and injury prevention in the female athlete. Dr. James is the Director for The Sports Medicine Program for Young Athletes at The Children’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado and is also an associate faculty member in the University of Colorado Physical Therapy Program. Dr. James has a passion for helping young athletes progress to higher levels of sport and to return to sport following injury. Additionally, Dr. James specializes in injury prevention of the young athlete. Doug Jowdy, PhD – Psychological considerations of the female athlete. Dr. Jowdy is an assistant professor and sports psychologist with CU Sports Medicine in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Jowdy specializes in the areas of coping with the emotional aspects of injury rehabilitation, coach and athlete relationship development, team dynamics, and coaching education. Dr. Jowdy has also served as team psychologist for the United States Olympic Speed Skating Team. Nancy Pudwill, RD – Nutritional considerations of the female athlete. Nancy Pudwill is the founder and director of Nutrition Connection, Inc. and specializes in sports and wellness nutrition, weight management and eating disorders. She is a professional member of the American Dietetic Association and enjoys being active in the Colorado outdoors.
