Change and Continuity Analysis Chart
Unit: 1900 to present

THEME
Human-Environment
Interaction
(Demography, disease,
Migration, technology)
Region (circle one): (Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia,
Characteristics at the
beginning of the period
During the 20th century Asian
societies differed greatly as
there were a number of
environments and
technological advances
throughout the region.
Key Changes
-at least TWO
-give evidence for each
Key Continuities
-At least TWO
-give evidence for each
Western technological
advances spreading to
countries like Japan and
China. Along with migration
out of rural areas of China and
Japan to economic centers.
Characteristics at the end of the
period
Analysis of continuities
Highly technologically advanced
societies throughout Asia along
with much larger populations.
Steady location for agriculture
and a growing population and
advances in technology.
Culture
(Religions, philosophies,
Science, technology,
art,
architecture)
Philosophies were for the
majority anti-western influence
and religions varied greatly
based on specific region or
nation.
Acceptance of Western
philosophies and sciences.
Along with cultural leaps and
increasing diversifying
acceptance.
Buddhism and Hinduism still
practiced. Older generation
differs from younger and
rejects western aceptance
Analysis of changes
Technological advanced all
throughout Asia with some
exceptions to rural areas.
Religions with more of a social
effect not previously seen in the
region’s countries.
Western advances are
increasingly accepted leading
to advanced technology. Also
in Russia (USSR), the end of
communism and fall of
soviets allows for more
interactions
The location of the region is
always constant and
continual search for
improvement that is always
present.
World Ward one and Two
place Asia on the map as a
powerful region along with
developing economies which
lead to more western
interest and acceptance.
Religions are always present
and older generations reject
the new ideas and sciences
that are being introduced to
them.
Politics
(State-building,
conflict, Political
structures, Empires,
Revolts and revolution)
United states control in areas,
along with the boxer rebellion
which was mostly against that.
While in Russia Communist
party with parliament is
present
China is completely freed
from any foreign control
today and no foreign colonies
exist within Asia. Russia’s
Soviet party is dropped and a
federation is formed.
Some countries such as North
Korea remain communist
Communism gone in Russia and
China, although China is more
socialist. And there are currently
conflicts with many other
countries worldwide regarding
communism in the remaining
countries.
Economics
(Agriculture, trade,
commerce, labors
systems,
industrialization,
capitalism, socialism)
While there was limited trade
in many Asian Nations at the
beginning of the 20th century
Japan was a wealthy nation
and was in close contact with
many countries around it.
Many Asian countries are now
major manufacturers for
Western goods as Russia is an
increasingly important role on
the world stage. Communist
economics are a thing of the
past for the more successful and
prosperous of Asian economies.
Plenty of interactions with
countries worldwide though
technology though internet and
ability to wire money and quick
spreading news.
Social
(Gender roles/
relations, family, racial
& ethnic constructions,
social and economic
classes)
Majority of people were not a
part of the upper class and
there was much diversity in
classes. And gender equality
was lacking compared to that
of other countries at the time
Many products are produced
there for western customers
and companies while western
influences are continually
seen in their economic status
as seen with recent events.
Russia faced an economy
crash but is recovering to be a
prosperous nation
Japan is still well off while in
some areas the worldwide
economy has not influenced
them and they face a similar
situation to that of Cuba.
The end of communism in
many nations led to the ability
for women to improve
relations and roll in society.
While the increasingly
successful economies of Asia
allowed at least in some
aspects a more equal social
structure with less of the
population in the peasant and
rural class
As economies in urban centers
became increasingly more
successful than those in rural
areas, so did the incomes of
people thus the divide that
there is now. Freedom of
women to make choices had led
to an end to arranged marriages
and some women remain single.
Rebellions and wars have
caused major change in Asia
in all areas. Whereas Russia
was forced to drop
communist party in order to
survive economically.
There has been no
immediate forceful end to
communism in some parts of
Asia and no change occurs.
The increasing acceptance of
western influence
incorporated them into the
global economy and
established the ability to
mass produce goods that
could be shipped to the west
and economically benefit
Asian regions.
Japan continued to be
successful and did well while
being incorporated into the
world economy.
Increasing disapproval of
communism in prominent
world economies led to drop
and from there many of
productive advancements for
women can be attributed to
the choice to pursue a career
rather than just marrying and
following strict social
distinctions.
The same class divides
remained between the people
of the upper and lower
classes. As well as in the home
where gender rolls continued
to be followed far beyond
many of the ideas the derived
from lost popularity.
The development of a higher
wage for upper class created
an even larger divide. And in
rural areas many of the
gender roles are still followed
as they’re change has been
mostly specific to urban
areas.
