American history timeline SIOP strategy British settlers establish the first permanent British colony in the New World at Jamestown, Virginia. They were in search of economic opportunities. The British fight against France to gain control of eastern North America. The British win the war, known as the French and Indian War, and win all of the lands east of the Mississippi River. British colonists in the thirteen American colonies rebel against Britain and King George III. They write the Declaration of Independence, stating the reasons for their decision to throw off British rule. The Americans win the War of Independence and Britain agrees to recognize American independence. Americans meet at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia and write the Constitution. It creates a republic in which the people rule through representatives they elect. America declares war on Great Britain and tries to invade Canada. The invasion is unsuccessful, and the war results in a draw. Americans take great national pride in defeating the British army and navy in the Battle of New Orleans. Gold is discovered in California. Americans rush to California in the hope of getting rich. California’s population increases rapidly, along with the businesses that are established to support the gold miners. The North and the South go to war against each other in the Civil War, mainly over the issue of slavery. The South is defeated and the country is reunited. The first transcontinental railroad is completed, linking the existing railroad lines in the eastern U.S. to the Pacific coast at San Francisco Bay. The railroad leads to explosive population growth in the western United States. The United States gives aid to the Allied Powers in World War I, and the Central Powers sink many American ships. America enters the war, and together, the Allied Powers win. The Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor and the United States enters World War II. The U.S. ends the war by dropping atomic bombs on Japan. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. leads the civil rights movement. Congress passes the Civil Rights Act, a law to guarantee civil rights to African Americans and other minorities. Al Qaeda, a Middle Eastern terrorist group, launches terrorist attacks against the U.S., crashing passenger jets into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The U.S. declares war on terror. Canadian history timeline SIOP strategy Vikings from Scandinavia in Europe sail to Canada and establish settlements in Newfoundland. They soon abandon the settlements and return to Europe. Explorer John Cabot sails from Europe to Canada’s east coast. He claims an area of land for Great Britain and names it Newfoundland. Samuel de Champlain establishes the first permanent French colony in Canada at Quebec. The French settle there as fur traders. The British and the French feel increasing rivalry as they both claim Canada. The British fight against France for control of eastern North America. The French lose the war and all of their territory in Canada and America, but Britain allows the French Canadian settlers to remain in Canada. After the War of Independence begins in America, many Americans who are loyal to Britain migrate to Canada. Canada becomes a colony of English-speakers as well as French-speakers. America declares war on Great Britain and tries to invade Canada. The invasion is unsuccessful, and the war results in a draw. The Canadians feel a great sense of nationalism and pride for stopping the invasion, and the border between the U.S. and Canada is set. Canadians rebel against British authority. Instead of fighting a war, the British allow the Canadians to form a partially independent country, the Dominion of Canada. Canada completes the construction of a transcontinental railroad, making it easier to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific coastlines of Canada. Gold is discovered on the western coast of Canada. The Canadian government establishes the Yukon Territory as a province of Canada to meet the governmental needs of the rapidly growing population of the territory. Canada enters World War I on the side of the Allied Powers to help Great Britain win the war. As a result, Canada establishes itself as a world power and increases the feeling of nationalistic pride in the country. Great Britain grants almost complete independence to Canada, and Canada begins making its own laws without interference from Britain. Complete independence later happens in 1982. Canada fights alongside the U.S., Great Britain, and the other Allied powers in World War II. After the war is won, Canada’s industries boom because of industrial and population growth.
