During the period from the 16-th to the 3-rd century BC a people called the Celts
invaded Britain. The Celtic tribes were called the Picts, the Scots, the Britons. The
Scots came in such large numbers to the north of the island that in time the name of
Scotland was given to that country. The Britons held most of the country, and the
southern part of the island was named Britain after them. The Celts were armed
with metal spears, swords, daggers and axes. In wartime the Celts wore skins and
painted their faces with a blue dye to make themselves to look fierce. They used

Two thousand years ago while the Celts were still living in tribes the
Romans were the most powerful people in the world. In 55 B.C. a Roman
army of 10000 men crossed the Chanel. The Celts saw the ships in the sea
and attacked the invaders. The Celts made a great impression on the
Romans, who saw them for the first time in battle. The Celts wan the battle.
In a year Julius Caesar returned in Britain with larger forces and wan several
battles. But he didn’t really conquer the country. Only after a hundred years
after Caesar’s visit the Romans invaded Britain and conquered the South
East. Strait stone roads were built. They were made so well, that they lasted
long and still exist today. Bridges of stone were built, some of which can be
found in Britain today. Besides, to guard the country against the Picts and
Scots who lived in the hills of Scotland a high wall was built in the north. It
was called “Hadrian’s Wall”. The towns with houses built of stone began to
grow.
Early in the 5- th century the Roman legions were recalled from Britain to
defend the central provinces of the Roman Empire from the attacks of the
barbarian tribes. They didn’t return to Britain, and the Celts were left alone

To adopt the customs- принять обычаи
After the Romans legions left Britain the Celts remained independent but not for
long. The Germanic tribes came to Britain in the 5th century. The British natives
fought against the invaders and it took the Anglo-Saxons more than a hundred and
fifty years to conquer the coyntry. In the course of the concuest many of the Celts
were killed, some were taken prisoners and made slaves. Many of them went to the
mountains of Wales, to the northern part of the Ireland (Scotland) or crossed the
sea and went to Ireland.
By the end of the 6th and the beginning of the 7th century several kingdoms were
formed on the territory of Britain conquered by the Germanic tribes. The AngloSaxons disliked towns, they preferred to live in small villages. They destroyed the
Roman towns and bridges soon fell in ruins. The Anglo-Saxons then made up the
majority of the population. They called the Celts “welsh” which means
“foreigners”. After some time the Celts adopted the customs of the Anglo-Saxons
and learned to speak their language. Only the Celts who remined independent in
Wales, Scotland and Ireland spoke their own languages.
At first the Anglo-Saxons spoke various dialects but in time the dialect of the
Angles of the central kingdom of the country became the main one. The people of
Britain were called English. The name of England was given to the whole country.
But since then the English language has undergone great change.
