Cell division is when a cell divides. It includes Gap One (G1), Synthesis (S), Gap Two (G2), Mitosis, and
Cytokinesis.
The process of Mitosis is the division of the cytoplasm. It includes Interphase, Prophase (and
prometaphase), Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase.
Interphase: chromosomes are clear in the nucleus, even though you might see a dark spot.
Prophase: chromatin starts to condense, and can be visible under a light microscope as
chromosomes. The outline of the nucleolus disappears.
Metaphase: chromosomes align in the center in a specific order. Also spindle fibers align the
chromosomes along the middle of the cell.
Anaphase: chromosomes are pulled to opposite ends by the kinetochores, with the spindle fibers are
dragging behind.
Cytokinesis: fiber ring made of proteins called actin around the cell which pinches the cell into two
new daughter cells.
Mitosis can help heal wounds/cuts because it is part of cell division which will make more cells, and cover
an opening.
