American Imperialism: Economic motivations
• Crisis of 1893-97: Railroad overbuilding and
stock market collapse. 17% unemployment
• US and European markets limited, so the US
looked for new markets to expand into
Ideological motivations
• Missionary work: spread the faith
• Nationalism and desire for empire: pride and
power!
• White Man’s Burden  white man’s duty to
provide for more backward races
Philippine-American War
• After the Spanish American
war, Spain gave its colony of
the Philippines to the United
States
• Philippine-American war last
three years (1899-1902) and
resulted in the death of over
4,200 Americans and over
20,00 Filipino combatants.
200,000 Filipinos civilians
died.
• Brutal war. The US
burned villages, tortured
suspected guerilla
warriors, and forced
Filipinos into
concentration camps
which one camp
commander called “the
suburbs of Hell.”
• Filipino fighters also
tortured soldiers and
terrorized civilians who
cooperated with
American forces
US Imperialism was incredibly controversial!
