EVOLUTION BY
NATURAL
SELECTION
ARTIFICIAL SELECTION
•
A process in the breeding of animals and in the cultivation of plants by which the breeder
chooses to perpetuate only those forms having certain desirable inheritable
characteristics.
NATURAL SELECTION
•
The process by which forms of life having traits that better enable them to adapt to
specific environmental pressures, as predators, changes in climate, or competition for
food or mates, will tend to survive and reproduce in greater numbers than others of their
kind, thus ensuring the perpetuation of those favorable traits in succeeding generations.
SELECTIVE FORCE
•
The physical and biological characteristics of the environment that favor the survival of
one species over another.
DARWIN’S THEORY OF EVOLUTION
1.
More individuals are produced each generation that can survive.
2.
Phenotypic variation exists among individuals and the variation is heritable.
3.
Those individuals with heritable traits better suited to the environment will survive.
4.
When reproductive isolation occurs new species will form.
