WELCOME to KNDU
Since its foundation in 1955, the KNDU has been the premier defense education
center for professional military strategy, defense policy and national security
strategy. The KNDU provides military and civilian leaders an educational and
research environment for military strategy, defense policy and national security.
The KNDU has greatly contributed to strengthen nation's mind on national security.

HISTORY
- Aug 1955: Founded as Korea National Defense College in Seoul
- Feb 1972: Research Institute of National Security Affairs established

VISION STATEMENT
The KNDU is the highest security education institute in Korea with the ambitious
vision of launching doctoral degree course in the academic year of 2008. The
Korea National Defense University(KNDU) is pursuing the world's best defense
university by sustaining highly qualified faculty and students. To achieve this
objective, the KNDU pays utmost effort on the acquisition of excellent faculty and
students, advanced educational system and infrastructure, and strengthening
academic cooperation with leading security education and research institutes of the
world.
MISSION STATEMENT
The KNDU educates national security and military strategy to the national-level
military and civilian leaders. In addition, the KNDU is a major think tank for
providing ideas and research outcomes on military, defense and national security
for the National Security Council, Ministry of National Defense and many
government organizations.
EDUCATIONAL FOCUS
Twenty-first century society requires excellent futurist leadership, military
professionalism and international business sense to military and civilian leaders
under the changing international security environment. It includes national defense
policy, military strategic planning, crisis management, information-age defense,
defense resources management and politico-military games. The KNDU is exerting
its utmost effort to fulfill these requirements.
The KNDU education focuses on the following three points:
1) academic research and teaching on national security
2) enhancement of student's capability on strategic planning and execution of
national security affairs
3) strengthening the national competencies through enhancing defense policy
and military strategic planning capability.
ORGANIZATION
The KNDU is comprised of four major education institutes, National Security
College, Joint Staff College, Defense Management College, and Duty Training
Center. The KNDU also has Research Institute for National Security
Affairs(RINSA), Center for Joint Doctrine Development, Center for Leadership
Development, PKO Center, and the Library.

ALUMNI
The KNDU graduates are some 23,500 until the year of 2006. Amongst them,
12,500 are military and 11,000 are civilians. NSP graduates are some 7,200, MDP
graduates are 3,000. JSC graduates are 1,200. DTC graduates are 11,600. The
KNDU alumni has actively made various nationally strategic services almost all the
national affairs arena.

CEO Program
National Security Program(NSP) is one year program for Colonel or Brigadier
General officers and director-level officials from government or semi-government
organizations. Approximately, 200 students attend the NSP course each year. There
are tens of foreign officers as well in this course. During the course, students learn
the national-level affairs including fundamentals of national security strategy, the
nature of war, military strategy and defense policy planning.
Master Degree Program(MDP) started in 1979. The MDP is two year program for
full-time students and two and half year for part-time students. The MDP has
approximately four hundred students in full-time course and two hundred in
part-time course. Students are mainly Captain or Major officers and equivalent
officials from national security related organizations.
The MDP has seven academic major areas such as International Relations, Military
Strategy, Defense Management, Leadership, Operations and Research, Computer
Science, and Weapon System. The KNDU will open doctoral degree course in the
year of 2008.
Joint Staff College(JSC) is one year program for Lieutenant Colonel officers and
equivalent officials from government organizations. The JCS has some 120
students each year. The JCS education is focussed on joint operations,
multinational operations and peace support operations. Military operations
increasingly require the armed services to work jointly and JCS teaches its students
the tools to operate in that environment such as joint operational planning and
warfighting. JSC has PKO center and Center for Joint Doctrine
Development(CJDD).
Duty Training Center(DTC) provides various programs for educating military and
security related officials to improve their business expertise on defence policy and
national security affairs. DTC programs are tailored to the requirements of the
various participants involved in the formulation and execution of national security,
defense policy and military strategy affairs. DTC programs include Advanced
Management Course, Capstone Course, Defense Project Managers Course,
Information Management Course, and Job Training Course.
OTHER INSTITUTIONS
Research Institute for National Security Affairs(RINSA) is a premier think tank
on national security studies for the Ministry of National Defense(MND) and
National Security Council(NSC). Since its foundation in 1972, RINSA has played a
key role for providing research outcomes to MND and NSC. RINSA is also playing
a key role for strengthening nation's consensus on national security and defense
policy through special lectures and seminars.
RINSA also takes a leading role for hosting international security conferences on
the Korean peninsula and special lectures of the world-class experts with
world-wide exchange programs. RINSA has now 8 research centers including
Center for Security Strategy, International Relations, Military Strategy, Military
Morale, Defense Management, and Information System Management.
RINSA publishes books, monographs, and periodicals on national security studies.
Center for Joint Doctrine Development(CJDD) is institute for developing joint
military doctrines. As emphasized jointness in military operations, the development
of joint doctrines become more and more important. CJDD has some 30 researchers,
mostly professionals of military field operations. CJDD has revised all the joint
doctrines(25) periodically. CJDD runs an international exchange program for
doctrinal research and development.
Institute for Leadership Development(CLD) is newly established in 2005, as
leadership increasingly emphasized in military fields. CLD has some 20 researchers.
CLD's utmost effort focuses on the development of leadership theory and field
manuals for military leaders at each level. CLD will lead military leadership
education for the ROK armed forces in the future.
The Library has approximately half a million volumes of books, monographs and
periodicals. It is the largest library on national security, defense and military affairs
in Korea. The library is fully digitalized and became a main hub of defense and
security information. It offers university community a full-scale on-line service and
an inter-library loan service.
ACADEMIC EXCHANGE PROGRAMs
The KNDU established MOU on promoting academic cooperation with 37
universities and institutes including four foreign NDUs and three security research
institutes. The academic sisterhood based upon these MOUs made it possible to
fulfill various demands for defense and security education in modern society.
The KNDU runs a international exchange programs. First, the KNDU offers an
opportunity to foreign NDU professors for having research studies for 1-2 weeks in
the KNDU. The KNDU provides them free accommodation and research facilities.
Second, the National Security Program of the KNDU provides an opportunity to
foreign officers, Colonel or Brigadier General, to take this program. The KNDU
provides research facilities including office in the library, accommodation, and
presessional language course, free of charge. Through the international exchange
program, the KNDU strengthens international cooperation further in the security
academic area.
In addition, the KNDU hosts international security conferences and seminars on
national security each year. Through the academic conferences and seminars, the
KNDU has accumulated international security specialists' viewpoint on Korea's
security issues.
The KNDU also runs research field trip to foreign countries. Approximately 450
students and faculty of the KNDU made a research field trip to foreign countries.
Through the field trip, students verify theory and practice on international security.
