Introduction
Use and implementation of the activities contained in the spring packet are optional and
voluntary. Activities were selected based on traditionally difficult areas of student skill
mastery while at the same time providing worthwhile practice with historical inquiry.
Topics were chosen based on Next Generation Sunshine State Standards benchmarks
tested on the Florida United States History End-Of-Course assessment.
Purpose of the Spring Packet
The activities in the spring packet were selected to allow students to experience some
fun with history over the spring break while simultaneously supporting practice with
skills they will need to demonstrate on assessments near the end of the school year.
This method of home-school academic connection serves to maintain acquired skills
while students are enjoying their spring break.
Activities in this packet are identified by Next Generation Sunshine State Standards
specifically targeted to grade level expectations for the students. Each activity has been
selected due to its high level of engagement and interest. Background information is

Background:
Boring names, facts, dates - this is history for many people. But historians think about
history differently. They see themselves as detectives, often unsure about what
happened, what it means, and rarely able to agree among themselves. This process of

trying to figure out things you don't already know is as different from mindless
memorization as you can get.
Procedure:
For each set of terms provided, create a graphic organizer (provided) to consider the
following criteria.
1) Develop a critical question about the terms provided. Your critical question will
connect to why these terms are significant or important.
2) Although the key terms** have been provided for you, they must be defined,
discussed, and placed in context in order to be understood.
3) How can you separate the critical question into smaller pieces? Your questions and
answers should represent a sequence of logical thinking and lead to an answer of the
critical question.
4) Write a short summary statement that answers the critical question.
5) How can you explore the main idea in more depth? Write a statement of how you
would do that or what that would look like.
6) Does this connect to any issues or events now? In this section you are asked to think
about long-term effects or historical impact.
Use your textbook and internet sources to complete the graphic organizer.
