Installation instructions for the EXMARaLDA Partitur Editor Version 1.3 (1. September 2004) In order to install the EXMARaLDA Partitur Editor on your computer please follow the following instructions step by step. 1. System requirements 1.1 Operating system You can install the EXMARaLDA Partitur Editor on the following operating systems: Microsoft Windows Apple Mac OS 10 Windows 98 Windows NT Windows 2000 Windows ME Windows XP Mac OS 10.1.X Mac OS 10.2.X (Jaguar) * Mac OS 10.3.X (Panther) * On some apple computers (i. e. for some graphics cards) the hardware acceleration, which is switched on by default, causes java applications to slow down considerably (especially on Mac OS 10.2.X). If this is the case on your computer, use the disk image EXMARaLDA_1.3_NOHWAC.dmg. It contains a version of the Partitur Editor for which hardware acceleration is switched off (for more details see 3 c). The Partitur Editor should run on all common Unix operating systems. So far, this has been confirmed for SuSE-Linux and RedHat-Linux. Linux / Solaris 1.2 Random access memory (RAM) You need at least 64 MB RAM in order to be able to work with JAVA, but it may be recommendable to have more than that. On Mac OS X, it is generally advisable to have at least 512 MB RAM 1.3 Hard disk space The application itself only requires a between 4-15 MB hard disk space (depending on your operating system). But you may need an additional 15 MB for the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and about 14 MB for the installation of the Arial Unicode MS font. 2. Installing the Java Runtime Environment The Partitur Editor is a Java application. It is not processed by the operating system itself but by an interposed Java machine which is part of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). You may have to install the JRE first before you can install the editor. 2.1 Check the currently installed JRE version Microsoft Windows Open a MS-DOS-window by choosing the appropriate command for your operating system: Windows 98: Windows NT: Windows 2000: Windows XP: Start Programs MS-DOS-Command Prompt Start Programs Command Prompt Start Run enter cmd OK Start All Programs Accessories Command Prompt Enter java –version and press Enter. You will either get an error message (if Java is not installed at all) or you'll be shown the currently installed version, e.g.: If the version 1.4.2-05 is shown you can skip step 2.2. 2.2. Installing the Java Runtime Environment Download the installer j2re-1_4_2_05-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe (approx. 15 MB) from the webpage, double click it and follow the installation instructions. Restart your computer and repeat step 2.1 – you should now be given the correct Java version. Apple Mac OS 10 Linux / Solaris The Java Runtime Environment is preinstalled on the Mac OS X operating system. Version 1.4.1. (for Panther also 1.4.2.) is available but might be buggy – depending on your individual hardware and software configuration. This is why alternative versions of the Partitur Editors – for Java 1.3.1. as well as for Java 1.4.2. are provided. In case that the JRE version 1.4.2-05 is not yet installed on your computer, go to the Java webpage http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp, choose the appropriate JRE download for your operating system and follow the installation instructions. 2 3. Installing the Partitur Editor If you have successfully completed steps 1 and 2 you are now ready to install EXMARaLDA on your computer. Download the installer setup.exe (approx. 3,7 MB) from the webpage. Start it by double clicking on it and follow the installation instructions. Microsoft Windows Apple Mac OS 10 Afterwards you can run the Partitur Editor by clicking on the corresponding symbol in the Start menu. For installing the EXMARaLDA Partitur Editors on your computer you have two choose from the following three options: a) the standard version, b) a special version in case of problems with the hardware acceleration and c) a special version for Mac OS 10.3. (Panther). a) Download the disk image EXMARaLDA_1.3.dmg (approx. 15 MB). Unpack it and move the unpacked application (EXMARaLDA_1.3) to the desired location on your hard disk. b) On some apple computers (i. e. for some graphics cards) the hardware acceleration, which is switched on by default, causes java applications to slow down considerably (especially on Mac OS 10.2.X). If this is the case on your computer, use the disk image EXMARaLDA_1.3_NOHWAC.dmg (approx. 15 MB). It contains a version of the Partitur Editor for which hardware acceleration is switched off. Download the disk image, unpack it (double click) and move the unpacked application (EXMARaLDA_1.3) to the desired location on your hard disk. c) If you operate with Mac OS 10.3. (Panther), you can also use the disk image EXMARaLDA_1.3_142.dmg (approx. 12 MB), which is based on the latest version of Java 1.4.2. (instead of 1.3.1.). Make sure that the latest Java version is installed on your computer (go for "Software Update..."). Download the disk image, unpack it (double click) and move the unpacked application (EXMARaLDA_1.3) to the desired location on your hard disk. Font “Arial Unicode MS” The virtual keyboard contains a great deal of special characters and symbols necessary for linguistic and multilingual transcribing. Some of these are only provided by very few fonts. One that covers many Unicode ranges is “Arial Unicode MS”, which is free and can be downloaded from the website. If the font "Arial Unicode MS" is not yet installed on your computer, download Arunipd.exe (approx. 14 MB). Double click it and follow the installation instructions. Microsoft Windows Apple Mac OS 10 If the font "Arial Unicode MS" is not yet installed on your computer, download the zip archive Arunims.zip (approx. 15 MB), unpack it (double click) and move the file "Arialuni.TTF" to the folder ~/Library/Fonts in your user directory. ./. Linux / Solaris 5. Questions, bugs, hints etc. In case of problems with the installation, please consult the help menu on the webpage http://www.rrz.unihamburg.de/exmaralda/index-en.html – especially the “FAQ“ and the “Short introduction to the Partitur Editor” or the “Handbuch” (manual) for the Partitur Editor. If you don't find an answer there, if you discover a bug or if you have other suggestions for improvements, feel free to send an e-mail to the developers. Please try to describe the problem as precisely as possible and make sure to attach the file „EXMARaLDA_log.txt” to your e-mail. You find it in your user directory on your computer.
