Obstacles to doing business in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon are gradually being removed and each of the three countries has its own attractions and strengths that should not be overlooked. Jordan Jordan’s unique position in the Middle East make it a useful starter market in the region. Trade with Jordan is heavily in the UK’s favour, with £245m exported in goods in 2007 and just £40m imported; the UK remains the 10th largest exporter to Jordan. The economy grew 2.8% in 2009 and is expected to grow 3-4% in 2010. Opportunities exist in a wide range of sectors: energy, ICT, telecommunications, water and wastewater, defence and security, life sciences, financial services, infrastructure and education. Syria Syria offers massive and exciting prospects after five years of steady liberalisation of its economy. The 2004 EU/Syria Association Agreement ensures that Syria will gradually remove import tariffs on EU goods in exchange for financial and technical support to modernise its economy. Sectors of opportunity include: tourism, agriculture, financial services, education and training, healthcare, oil and gas, retail and construction. Lebanon Lebanon has embarked on a liberal economic reform and the Lebanese government welcomes UK involvement in its reconstruction programme. Privatisation of power, water, telecommunications and aviation is currently planned. Politically Lebanon has entered a period of calm with a national unity government being formed in December 2009. UK exports to Lebanon are at a record level and Lebanon is the UK’s largest trading partner in the Levant. Sectors of opportunity include: construction, healthcare, oil and gas, financial services, education, ICT, environment and security. Join us to learn about the range of opportunities that have emerged from the opening up of the Levant.
