In the event of nuclear war,
what about the great crowd?
QUESTION: How is it possible that nuclear bombs could rain
down on cities around the world? I would imagine, for
example, that there are tens of thousands of Jehovah’s
Witnesses living in New York City alone, who claim to be
of the great crowd, how could any of these people come out
alive if New York city is taken out by a nuke? The book of
Revelation says a great crowd comes out of the great
tribulation alive. So, my question is: How can cities be
vaporized by nukes and yet the members of the great crowd
not be affected? Or do many die and are simply
resurrected?
ANSWER: First, the great crowd is indeed composed of those
who come out of the great tribulation. They are not
resurrected. But it is premature at this point for anyone to
claim to be part of that group. The great crowd will only
become recognizable when they emerge from the tribulation.
As regards the possibility of nuclear war, back during the
so-called Cold War it was assumed that nuclear war was
rendered impossible due to the inevitable total destruction
of the planet. Because both the USSR and the US possessed
the firepower to mutually, virtually simultaneously,
annihilate each other and everyone else, the doctrine of
Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) is said to have been an
effective deterrent to such madness.
However, in the early 90’s the USSR was suddenly disbanded
and Russia went into decline. With the end of the superpower
standoff the Anglo-American duo became the sole superpower
and immediately began a stealth program designed to encircle
Russia and China with military bases and destabilized
countries, while key aspects of Western military philosophy
were subtly shifted from a defensive focus to accommodate
what is known as a first-strike policy.
During the Cold War era a first strike would surely have
provoked a retaliatory response and the MAD syndrome, but
due to the advanced technology of antiballistic missile
systems a first strike is made all the more tempting – the
idea being to strike, not populated centers, but a nation’s
missile silos and command centers, in an effort to
decapitate a nuclear power. Missile shields would then
intercept the stray missile that may be launched in the
aftermath. This is what is afoot now in Ukraine. NATO is
seeking to deploy their missile shields right up on Russia’s
borders as a prelude to war.
On the other hand, it is noteworthy that in large portions
of the world there is virtually no presence of Jehovah’s
Witnesses. The Islamic nations in particular simply do not
tolerate the preaching of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Ironically,
their hatred of Christianity may well be why Jehovah may
allow some of those nations to be directly targeted for
annihilation.
Obviously, though, just a few dozen nuclear blasts anywhere
on the planet will terrorize people out of their wits and
require God to intervene to prevent mankind from being
exterminated.
