Mark part 38…Nov. 11th 2015 Chapter 8:31-33 Last week we saw where Jesus asked the disciples two questions. The first was…who do men say that I am? The second was who do you say that I am? As I said last the week the most important question that can ever be asked is who do we say Jesus is? Peter as the spokesman for the group answered and said… You are the Christ. Peter answered correctly Matthew tells us how Peter knew that answer… Mt. 11:27 No one knows the Son except the Father, nor does anyone know the Father except the Son and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. What this means is a person can’t know God unless the Son reveals Him to you and you can’t know Jesus unless the Spirit reveals Him to you. Jesus was confessed in their hearts as the Messiah because the work of God and the work of the Holy Spirit had been done in their hearts. Peter must have felt like a hero because of His answer and it being right. Hero’s come and go and a hero can become a zero very quickly. If I were to title this tonight I would call it from a hero to zero. The disciples have just declared who Jesus is and it is a grand moment of revelation. But in verse 31 there is a major shift. The last thing that anyone would expect after reading verses 27-30 would be Jesus saying what He said in verse 31. Verse 31 and He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priest’s and scribes and be killed and after 3 days rise again. Pay close attention to the words He began to teach. 1 From this verse on Jesus teaching the disciples will be the theme. Mark 9:31 says… As they go He is teaching His disciples. What was Jesus teaching them? Verse 31…He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer, be rejected and be killed and rise again. First of all he taught them He must suffer. Notice Jesus didn’t say He would suffer He said He must suffer. The word must is important because it means it’s necessary or it was required of Him to do so. Also notice verse 31 says He must suffer many things. Those things would include… Betrayal…arrest…denial…abandonment Injustice…prison…mockery…beatings... crucifixion…great pain and disaffection from His disciples. Jesus would also be rejected. The word rejected comes from the word dokimazo, it means to test something to see if it is true, to validate it or access it. Reject means to determine after careful consideration as flawed or faulty after an examination. It is important to see who the inspectors are that reject Jesus. Verse 31 tells who they are… The ones that would reject Him are not atheists or pagans that would probably be easier… He would be rejected by the elders, and chief priests and scribes. Rejection always hurts but it hurts more when it comes from those who should be for us. It was the elders, chief priests and scribes that bought Judas, they were the ones responsible for His betrayal. They were the ones who handed Jesus over to the Romans for all the physical abuse… 2 They would be responsible and behind Jesus’ death. Jesus told the disciples He would suffer, be rejected, and then He told them He would be killed, Jesus is telling them Isaiah 53…He would be wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities and the chastisement of our peace would fall on Him and by His stripes we would be healed. It is very easy when we are told something we don’t want to hear to zone out and not listen to the whole story. One more time I want us to look at verse 31 and read it… And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priest’s and scribes and be killed, Notice there is a comma after the word killed…not a period. A period means the end of the statement or sentence… A comma means a pause in the sentence or statement. The disciples put a period there or stopped listening right there. Jesus didn’t stop there He only paused and then He said… And after three days rise again. That’s part of Isaiah 53 as well. But they didn’t hear that. They shut Jesus down when He said He was going to be killed. How many times do we do the same in life? We listen up to a point that something is said that we don’t like or don’t want to hear and then we quit listening and start focusing on what we have heard and miss what we ought to hear. I also feel like I should say it is easy to put a period where God only puts a comma. Some of you God hasn’t said it’s the end or it’s over…it is just a pause He isn’t finished yet. Keep listening, keep focusing don’t shut Him down there is more to come. Jesus said He would be killed comma and after three days rise again. 3 Verse 32 says Jesus spoke this word openly. Another way to say that is Jesus stated the matter clearly. The disciples didn’t like this plan at all. Peter who is now the hero because of his answer as to who Jesus is… Decides to put in his superhero cape and come to the rescue. Verse 32 says…then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. What this really means is Peter grabbed Jesus and said come with me Lord, Son of God, come with me Messiah we need to have a talk. Peter knowing Jesus is the Messiah feels the need to give Jesus some instructions and clarification as to what being the Messiah means. Peter thinks Jesus needs a little help with the role and knowing what His responsibility is. Peter the hero takes Jesus aside to help him out by rebuking Him. Peter told Jesus according to Matthew this stuff isn’t going to happen to You because we are not going to allow to happen. Verse 33…But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples He rebuked Peter where they could all hear Him say… Get behind Me satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men. What Jesus says to Peter is get out of My sight satan. Wow the hero has to take off the cape because he is now a zero. Matthew says Jesus told him he was a stumbling block, which is something that gets in the way or is a hindrance. Peter and the other disciples didn’t want a cross or death in the Jesus’ future. The reason they didn’t want Jesus elevated on a cross was because they wanted to be elevated. They wanted glory and power and prosperity. They couldn’t get that from a dead Messiah. 4 So Peter went not to rescue Jesus he went to rescue himself and the rest of the disciples plan for their lives. Jesus said to Peter you are an offence to Me, you are a satan trap to Me. If you try to keep Me from the cross you are on satan’s side. So get out of My way all you want are the things of men and are not mindful of the things of God. Every time I say what I am getting ready to say I get some feedback or I mix people up but I am going to say it anyway. And this verse proves my point… Satan never wanted Jesus to die on the cross…he wanted Him dead or out of the way but didn’t want Jesus to die on the cross. The cross meant defeat for satan and victory for you and me and all of mankind. Satan knew the purpose of the cross and he knew he had to do all he could to keep Jesus off it. That’s why Jesus told Peter he was a stumbling block if he tried to keep Him from dying on the cross. Satan tried to be a stumbling block to Jesus when he tempted Him in the wilderness. The reason was because the cross would be a stumbling block to satan. The way of man is glory and blessing and power without suffering and without pain. God’s way is glory, blessing, and power through suffering. Peter learned a great lesson that day and the proof that he learned his lesson is found in his own writings. 1st Peter 2:21-24… For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us leaving us and example that you should follow His steps. Peter is saying since Jesus suffered we will suffer too. 1st Peter 2:22 who committed no sin nor was deceit found in His mouth. Verse 23…Who when He was reviled did not revile in return when He suffered He did not threaten but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously. 5 Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree that we having died to sins might live for righteousness by whose stripes you were healed. When Peter writes this it shows he had learned the lesson Jesus was trying to teach him. What was the lesson? To be perfected, confirmed, strengthened and established it requires glory through suffering. 6
