Zsolt Fülöp
Director of ATOMKI
ATOMKI belongs to the research network of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences
and also has a contractual
partnership with several
institutes and universities,
among them with the University of Debrecen, based
on a long-standing cooperation in research and education. In the institute both
fundamental and applied
research are represented in
the fields of particle physics, nuclear physics, atomic
physics, material, earth and environmental sciences,
archeology, medical and industrial technology. Besides research and teaching (training of students,
diploma workers, PhD students and research fellows),
ATOMKI shares in extended R&D activities through its
laboratories, clusters and spin-off companies.
Infrastructure and knowledge
ATOMKI is a center of knowledge and expertise
in atomic and nuclear physics and the
application of their methods in material and
environmental sciences. The Institute has 4
strategic infrastructures in the National Research
Infrastructure Register, among others its
Accelerator Centre. The wide range of international
and domestic collaborations also demonstrates the
competitiveness of the institute.

Innovation and clusters
The main goal of organizing the innovation activity in
clusters is to ensure high quality scientific research
and diagnostic service especially for Central European
partners. ATOMKI is a member of several clusters.
Pharmapolis Debrecen Innovative Cluster (www.
pharmapolis.hu) that provides preclinical services
for determination of the efficacy of drug or drug
candidates. Its two project companies:
- Icono-Pharma project company and
- Pharmatom project company.
Thermal Health Care Industry Cluster (www.termalegeszsegipariklaszter.hu) is the organization of preclinical and clinical studies related to health care
research.
Hungarian Space Cluster (www.hunspace.org) is
dealing with development of space technology for
components of satellites, data transfer/ evaluation
and electronics.
Prizmatech (www.prizmatech.hu) Instrument Manufacturer and Developer Cluster of Debrecen - coordinated by ATOMKI - collects and organizes, in network
based cooperation, the
market participants,
companies, research
institutions and higher
educational
institutions of health care,
environmental and mechatronics industry interested in instrumental and methodological
development.
Examples of major innovation achievements:
The miniPET-II: small animal PET scanner for
preclinical drug studies (partners: University of
Debrecen, MEDISO Ltd., Budapest University of
Technology and Economics)
CardiotomTM: mobile 3D gamma camera for diagnosis
of acute myocardial heart infarction (partners:
Karolinska University Hospital, Karolinska Institute,
Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden)
