POSITION: Wastewater Operator DEPARTMENT: Wastewater Treatment FULL TIME (40 hours/week with occasional overtime) Starting Pay: 9.00/hr. FSLA: Non Exempt GENERAL DEFINITION: Operate and maintain the wastewater treatment facility; takes readings, runs lab tests, maintains equipment and cleans clarifiers. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief Wastewater Plant Operator. SUPERVISION EXCERCISED: None ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following, as well as other duties as assigned. Clean clarifiers, run lab tests and collect samples, perform lab tests ordinarily performed by lab technician on weekends, check and maintain equipment, take and record readings from flow meter, chlorinator and cylinders. Take PH readings, D.O. on effluent and aeration basins, change empty chlorine and Sulphur-dioxide cylinders as needed, check and maintain lift stations, maintain grounds including duties such as mowing and edging around facilities. Reading and writing to be able to complete reports, lab findings; read manuals and meters; ability to perform mathematical analysis; ability to analyze basic data. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Visual Color Discrimination – To take samples and run lab tests; to determine levels of chemicals, Walking/Standing – On tile floors, asphalt, grass, grill work, dirt and concrete. Handling – To use winches, shovels, rake, broom, water hose, hoist, air pack, gas masks, scrub brush. Carrying/Lifting –Sample bottles, 1-12 lbs. for samples, lifting manhole lids100lbs; carry tools, Twisting – To clean out bar screen; clean clarifier; clean and maintain equipment, Vision – To take readings on, flow meter, chlorine analyzer; run lab tests; samples Climbing/Pushing/Pulling/Reaching – Climbing to check screens, pulling hose to clean clarifier, over 50lbs of exertion; adjust blower wheels 16-20lbs of exertion from up to 4ft height; push/pull winches – 13-25lbs of exertion weekly; push chlorine and sulfur dioxide cylinders (empties) over 50lbs of exertion; pull cans a distance of 14ft from bar screen to load in truck – over 50lbs of exertion each; pushing or pulling pump parts up to 100lbs; Moving Chlorine cylinders – 220lbs. Work indoors and outdoors in all types of weather, frequent exposure to pathogenic bacteria, viruses and sewage. MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND WORK AIDES: PH meter, D.O. meter, sludge judge, sampling buckets, chlorine meter, vacuum pump, balance, Millipore flask, filter, stirrer, hot plate, rake, shovel, broom, water hose, wrenches; hoist, air pack, gas masks, squeegee, scrub brush. PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: Leather boots, hard hat, special clothing, gloves, eye protection, ear protection and other as required. JOB REQUIREMENTS: High School Diploma or GED, Valid Texas Driver License, with the ability to access a class “D” wastewater certificate within one year and a “C” wastewater certificate within 2 years. CRIMINAL HISTORY, DRUG TEST and DRIVER'S LICENSE CHECK REQUIRED. City of Jacksonville conducts RANDOM DRUG tests. EOE
