• Are the components that make up the design

Line
• Line is the visual path the eye follows to produce
motion.
• Provides the framework of a design.
• Produced by the use of foliage materials: stems,
branches, line flowers.
Line can help:

Types of
Lines
Vertical• Draws eye to point at either end suggesting motion
• Exclamation point
• Suggests: strength, dignity, severity, formality
Horizontal• Draws eye to point on either end suggesting motion
• Suggests: rest, informality, stability
Curved• Suggests: gentleness, whimsical, feminine
Form
• Form is the overall shape of a design or
composition.
• Provides vitality and interest and prevents tired
and monotonous designs
Types of 3-D Forms:
• Closed form- solid, compact, mass
• Open Form- spreading, radiating, space between
parts
Space
• Space refers to the open areas around the
individual components in a composition.
• Two categories:
▫ Positive space- area occupied by materials
▫ Negative space- empty area in between
components (open space)
Examples of
Space
Texture
• Texture refers to physical surface qualities of
plant materials (smoothness, glossiness,
roughness, etc)
• Materials with similar textures should be
combined.
Shape
• The pattern a floral design forms
• The pattern may be:
▫ Linear
▫ Mass
▫ Combination of both

Color
• Is defined as light reflected off objects
• Can have strong emotional and psychological

impact
• Includes the following
 hue (name)
 value (how light or dark)
 intensity (how bright or dull)
