Tom Brock, WorleyParsons Vice President of Procurement, presents Sissy Boyd of the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation (CFF) with a check for $120,000 to be used for Cystic Fibrosis research.
WOW!
Another successful
tournament which has far
exceeded
our
expectations.
WorleyParsons’
13th
Annual
Breath of Life Golf Tournament,
benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation, was held on Monday,
October 11, 2010. A remarkable
$120,000.00 was raised in a
year of an economic downturn;
what a wonderful tribute to an
organization that depends solely
on private donations for research!
A huge THANKS to all those
who participated, especially to
our sponsors and donors.
We had 270 players and over
50 volunteers, without whom
we could not have had such a
successful tournament.
Our tournament this year will be
on Monday, October 10th, 2011
at Sweetwater Country Club. As
always, the event will include,
lunch, auctions, raffles, dinner,
and much more.
We look forward to seeing you
all again for another fun filled day
of food, drink, prizes, more food,
and oh yes, golf.
We are expecting an even
bigger success in the 2011 year,
so, mark you calendars and be
sure to join WorleyParsons for our
14th year as sponsor and host of
this most deserving charity event.

Again, thanks to all who
participated last year, and an early
thanks to all who will be among
those who have the privilege in
participating this year.

Cystic Fibrosis: What You Need to Know
What Is Cystic Fibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited
chronic disease that affects the lungs
and digestive system of about 30,000
children and adults in the United
States (70,000 worldwide). A defective
gene and its protein product cause the
body to produce unusually thick, sticky
mucus that clogs the lungs and leads
to life-threatening lung infections; and
obstructs the pancreas and stops
natural enzymes from helping the
body break down and absorb food.
In the 1950s, few children
with cystic fibrosis lived to attend
elementary school. Today, advances
in research and medical treatments
have further enhanced and extended
life for children and adults with CF.
Many people with the disease can
now expect to live into their 30s, 40s
and beyond.
First place winners with tent sponsor Invensys.
Symptoms of CF
People with CF can have a variety
of symptoms, including:
•Very salty-tasting skin;
•Persistent coughing, at times with
phlegm;
•Frequent lung infections;
•Wheezing or shortness of breath;
•Poor growth/weight gain in spite of
a good appetite; and
•Frequent greasy, bulky stools or
difficulty in bowel movements.
Statistics
•About 1,000 new cases of cystic
fibrosis are diagnosed each year.
•More than 70% of patients are
diagnosed by age two.
•More than 45% of the CF patient
population is age 18 or older.
•The predicted median age of
survival for a person with CF is in
the mid-30s.
The CF Foundation (CFF)
new strategies to tackle the disease.
Dinner after the tournament.
This
multidisciplinary approach to
research was pioneered by the CFF,
and later adopted by other disease
organizations.
The discovery of the CF gene in
1989—the single most important
discovery in CF research—was the
result of an international research
collaboration. With the CF gene in
hand, CFF researchers for the first
time could make a healthy version of
the gene for further study.
In 1993, the first gene therapy
treatment was given to a CF patient,
and gene therapy research was truly
launched. At the same time, other
research teams were searching for
ways to correct the faulty protein
product of the genes and discover new
treatments that addressed symptoms.
By pursuing several research
strategies at once, the CF Foundation
has built a pipeline of potential new
CF therapies. There are currently
more than two-dozen therapies in
development—more than at any time
in the Foundation’s 51-year history.
To keep “stocking” this pipeline
with promising therapeutics, many
CF researchers continue to translate
new knowledge from basic science
laboratories into potential therapies.
Executive Patron Donors display decorated plates,
made by children with CF as a token of thanks.
Major Donors show off their plates that are painted by children with Cystic Fibrosis as a token of appreciation.
Each plate is initialed by the artist on the back side.
Golf carts lined up the morning before the
tournament, and volunteers prepare for the day.
Since 1955, CFF has been the
driving force behind the pursuit of
a cure. Thanks to the dedication
and financial backing of supporters-patients, families and friends,
clinicians, researchers, volunteers,
individual donors, corporations and
staff, they are making a difference.
The Science of Adding
Tomorrows
When a group of parents started
CFF in 1955, they set their sights
high—to advance understanding of
this little known disease, to create
new treatments and specialized care
for their children, and to find a cure.
Continuous progress has been
made toward these goals thanks to
the CFF’s efforts to harness the best
minds in science, recruit the finest
research talent and train dedicated
cystic fibrosis care teams.
Part of the CFF’s “formula for
success” remains its ability to attract
scientists from new fields to join in
the mission to increase the length
and improve the quality of life for
people with CF. Researchers from
diverse disciplines, such as molecular
biology, immunology and medicinal
chemistry, routinely collaborate to find

Our Volunteers
Every
year
WorleyParsons
organizes a group of volunteers to
help support the Breath of Life Golf
Tournament and the CF Foundation
Employees of both WorleyParsons
and other tournament sponsors
come together to give of their time
to see that the day runs without a
glitch. It is a special sight to see
when WorleyParsons employees,
customers, and suppliers all come
together to support this worthy event.
The Golf Tournament is always a
huge success - our volunteers are the
reason! Without them, the tournament
would truly be impossible to hold. It
is part of the proof that supports the
statement that the organization’s best
asset is its people.
The volunteers are involved in a
lot of behind the scenes coordination;
everything from course setup, to
registration, to photography, to holein-one witnesses, to the all-important
beverage carts, to evening ticket
sales, and joking around with the
players. It all makes for a challenging,
but rewarding, fun, and exciting day!
Last year was better than ever
and our volunteers are to thank! We
received multiple compliments stating
how well things ran. We are looking
forward to doing it again this year!!
Although the tournament itself does
not start until after lunch, there are
positions to fill throughout the day anywhere from 7 AM until 8 PM. There
is a spot for any and everyone looking
to get involved - part of the day, all of
the day, inside, or outside!
We always close the day with a
dinner, silent auction, and raffle event.
This is always a big success for our
tournament and it is one of the highest
quality dinner meals provided after
any charity golf tournament around. It
is great to close the day with a very
nice meal and a cold drink.
Since it is such an important part of
the day, we always want the volunteers
to partake in the meal and the events
which take place!
The bottom line is this: our
volunteers make this tournament
successful every year. Let’s do it
again!

to the tournament by volunteering this
year?
