BOLT ACTION RIFLE
•Most accurate firing rifle of the era
•Fires 15 rounds a minute
•Accuracy could kill a person almost
1400 meters away
• French attached a bayonet to this
weapon
MACHINE GUNS
•Needed between 4-6 men to man them
in 1914
•Had to be positioned on a flat surface
to be used/overheated easily
•Fired 400-600 rounds per minute
• Good as a defensive warfare
technology
ARTILLERY FIRE
•Describe large calibre field guns
•These guns fired artillery shells which exploded
upon impact
•Artillery shells were filled with shrapnel
•Needed 10 men to operate
•CHLORINE GAS
•Distinctive smell and color (yellow green
cloud)
• Within seconds of inhaling the gas it
destroyed the lungs causing a soldier to
choke
• First used by the Germans at the Battle of
Ypres
• Used to pollute enemy
trenches because the gas
remained active in the soil
for weeks
•Caused soldiers skin to
blister(mustard-colored
blisters), eyes to be sore,
and vomiting.
•Soldiers would eventually
die from internal and
external bleeding from
blisters
•5 weeks to dies
•Very painful death for
soldiers

Numbers

Country/ Total Casualties/ Death
Austria-Hungary: 100,000/ 3,000
British Empire: 188,7068/ 109
France: 190,000/ 8,000
Germany: 200,000 / 9,000
Italy: 60,000/ 4,627
Russia: 419,340/ 56,000
USA: 72,807/ 1,462
Others: 10,000/ 1,000
GAS MASKS
• In order to protect soldiers from gas
attacks, gas masks were developed
• Gas masks became standard issued items
to soldiers during World War I
ZEPPELINS
•Germany first developed the Zeppelins
•These airships weighed 12 tons and contained over 40,000
cubic feet of hydrogen
• Travelled at speeds of up to 136mph and heights of 4250
metres!
•They were used for air strikes
•Abandoned because they were highly explosive and easy
targets of the enemy
PLANES
This is a German Bi-plane
called the Fokker
•The first planes were used for reconnaisance work
•As the war progressed airplanes were used to deliver
explosives
•Pilots were even known to fight enemy aircraft in the air, in
‘dogfights’ to protect the men on the ground
•Early planes were known as flaming corpses
This is a British
plane called a Voisin
•First tank was nicknamed
Little Willy
•Used by the British at
the battle of the Somme
•Used to offer protection
to soldiers from machine
gun fire
•Moved 2 mph
• Not a success for the
Allies (could not cross
enemy trenches)
•Germans developed the u-boat (undersea
boat)
•Used to conduct unrestricted submarine
warfare (torpedo any ships the u-boats
encountered
In May of 1915, U-20 sank the liner RMS
Lusitania
• The weapons of WWI will cause a new
kind of war to be fought.
• Soldiers will be forced to
• New weapons will cause war to have a
high death rate
