Health risk for forecourt staff Basic forecourt health risk: The handling of petroleum products can result in dry, cracked skin and possibly dermatitis Inhalation of high vapor concentration can irritate the respiratory system and have a narcotic effect resulting in nausea, dizziness, headaches and confusion Ingestion of fuel is highly unlikely at your service station although the practices of siphoning from a tank using a hose and poor/non-existent labelling of a storage container such as a bottle increases the chances that it may occur Tuberculosis (TB) Some recommended controls: Use Toolbox Talks and Safety Talks Ensure all the relevant Safety Data Sheets are available on site Ensure that the staff understand the information provided in the Safety Data Sheet for each product Ensure forecourt attendants are wearing Engen approved, fire retardant uniforms Ensure correct PPE is available, used correctly and is in good condition Use proper spill kits to clean-up fuel spillages to prevent excessive vapor on the forecourt Ensure all equipment is in good condition Ensure forecourt staff understand how to handle petroleum products during the various activities Never allow staff to enter fuel manholes or any confined space Ensure hand wash, hot water and disposable paper towel is available for staff to use after working with the products
