Health risk for
forecourt staff
Basic forecourt health
risk:
 The handling of petroleum products can
result in dry, cracked skin and possibly
dermatitis
 Inhalation of high vapor concentration
can irritate the respiratory system and
have a narcotic effect resulting in
nausea, dizziness, headaches and
confusion

Ingestion of fuel is highly unlikely at your
service station although the practices of
siphoning from a tank using a hose and
poor/non-existent labelling of a storage
container such as a bottle increases the
chances that it may occur
 Tuberculosis (TB)
Some recommended
controls:
 Use Toolbox Talks and Safety Talks
 Ensure all the relevant Safety Data Sheets
are available on site
 Ensure that the staff understand the
information provided in the Safety Data
Sheet for each product
 Ensure forecourt attendants are wearing
Engen approved, fire retardant uniforms
 Ensure correct PPE is available, used
correctly and is in good condition
 Use proper spill kits to clean-up fuel
spillages to prevent excessive vapor on the
forecourt
 Ensure all equipment is in good condition
 Ensure forecourt staff understand how to
handle petroleum products during the
various activities
 Never allow staff to enter fuel manholes
or any confined space
 Ensure hand wash, hot water and
disposable paper towel is available for
staff to use after working with the
products
